Six months and $10,000 later, family still doesn't know who struck ...

Roger Bryant was killed in April while trying to find a ride home from the hospital. (Courtesy of family)

Roger Bryant was killed on a dark April morning while trying to get home from the hospital. (Courtesy of family)

Despite a six-month investigation and a substantial reward, still no one seems to know who hit and killed a schizophrenic man trying to get home from Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

Having been ambulanced to the hospital overnight for a stomach ache, 54-year-old Roger Bryant was released early on the morning of April 3 ? several hours before a massive cluster of tornadoes descended on North Texas.

Family tells me the hospital had been trying to get Bryant a taxi voucher so he could get home to his 97-year-old father. Bryant may have got impatient. According to his family, he left the hospital with no ride home and walked down the block to a 7-Eleven at Zang and Colorado. A Big Gulp was the last thing he ever bought.

Bryant had physical illnesses besides the schizophrenia. He walked very slowly and may have been confused that morning. His family tells me a surveillance camera filmed him ambling his way across the 100 block of East Colorado about 5:50 a.m ? but there?s no footage of the vehicle that struck him there.

A woman came across Bryant not long afterwards, laying in the left-hand turn lane, and called 911. An ambulance took him back to Methodist, where he lay in a coma for 10 days before dying.

Bryant?s death didn?t get much coverage at the time, with the tornadoes and their aftermath consuming media coverage. Last month, his family increased the reward for information leading to an arrest to $10,000 ? but they still know nothing.

Meanwhile, Bryant?s father ? who survived a POW camp in WW2 but now has Alzheimer?s ? has moved to an assisted-living center in his son?s absence.

A relative who asked not to be named tells me that father and son both needed help in life, but Bryant ?was kind of his dad?s memory.?

If you know anything about the death of Roger Bryant, you can call Dallas police at 214-670-5818 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 214-373-TIPS.

Ambassador Rice: Benghazi attack began spontaneously

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice recaps the causes and effects of recent violence against Americans in the Middle East.

By NBC News staff and wire services

The attack that killed four Americans at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, apparently began as a spontaneous protest against an anti-Islam film before turning violent, Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday.

Rice, appearing in NBC?s ?Meet the Press,? said she was citing preliminary information and that the FBI was investigating the Tuesday night attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three others.

Libyan officials are holding 30 to 40 suspecting in the deadly attack of a the US embassy in Libya. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

A wave of protests and violence has swept across the Middle East and elsewhere in the Muslim world over an obscure, amateurish movie called "Innocence of Muslims" that depicts Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a pedophile. Anti-U.S. protests in 20 countries led the Pentagon to dispatch elite Marine antiterrorism teams to Libya and Yemen and to position two Navy warships off Libya's coast.

Meanwhile, the State Department ordered all nonessential U.S. government workers and their families out of Sudan and Tunisia. In Lebanon, protesters torched an American fast-food restaurant. Even as tensions appeared to?ease over the?weekend, al-Qaida's most active Mideast branch was calling for further attacks on U.S. embassies.

"There's no question, as we've seen in the past with things like 'The Satanic Verses,' with the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad, there have been such things that have sparked outrage and anger and this has been the proximate cause of what we've seen," Rice said.

?What happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, prompted by the video,? Rice said.

More from "Meet the Press": Israeli PM tries to strike more neutral pose in U.S. election?

Protesters in Cairo had breached the walls of the U.S. Embassy and tore down the American flag.

In Benghazi, Rice told ?Meet the Press? host David Gregory, ?Opportunistic extremist elements came to the consulate as this was unfolding, they came with heavy weapons, which unfortunately are readily available in post-revolutionary Libya, and it escalated into a much more violent episode.?

Related:

There was ?no actionable intelligence? that the attack in Benghazi was imminent, Rice said. The attack overwhelmed security in place at the consulate, she said.

Rice?s comments came a day after Libyan President Mohammed Magarief told NBC News that ?foreigners? were involved in the planning and execution of the attack.

He expanded on the assertion Sunday, saying on CBS? "Face the Nation" that about 50 people, not all Libyans, have been arrested in connection with the Benghazi attack, which he said was planned by al-Qaida-linked foreigners, some from Mali and Algeria.

Magarief said there was little doubt the assault was planned rather than a spontaneous reaction to the video, as came on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S.

He said the security situation in Libya remained "difficult" for Americans, as well as for Libyans. The United States wants the FBI to investigate the consulate attack, but Magarief said it may be too soon to send in investigators.

"It may be better for them to stay away for a little while until we do what we have to do ourselves," he said.

Rice told "Meet the Press" that the U.S. is working with authorities in Libya, which has received $200 million in U.S. aid?since 2011,?to bring to justice those responsible for the attack.

Protection for humans on Mars

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? For six weeks NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has been working on the Red Planet. NASA also plans to send humans to Mars within the next 20 years. On the flight and during the stay on Moon or Mars the astronauts have to be protected against long exposure to cosmic radiation that might cause cancer.

On behalf of the European Space Agency ESA the GSI Helmholtzzentrum f?r Schwerionenforschung GmbH tests whether Moon and Mars regolith can be used to build shieldings for ground stations.

On Earth the atmosphere and the magnetic field weaken cosmic rays. But on Moon and Mars they pelt down unhamperdly. The cosmic radiation can harm astronauts and could cause cancer in the long run as a result of damage in DNA and cells.

Chiara La Tessa is manager of experiments in GSI biophysics. She explains why Moon or Mars ground stations would not be built from terrestrial high tech material: "In space travels every gram counts. Transporting building material through space would lead to a cost explosion. That is why ground stations would basically be built from Moon and Mars regolith -- especially the shielding. We know from the analyses done by rovers what the local sand and stones consist of. With this information one can produce Moon and Mars regolith on Earth and we test it for its properties." As cosmic rays are nothing else but fast ions that were accelerated by star explosions they can be simulated by an accelerator. The GSI facility is one of the few able to reproduce cosmic rays in an original way.

After the GSI team tested how well the stone slabs can protect against radiation in the American accelerator laboratory in Brookhaven, they now explore how many neutrons are produced in the materials when radiated.

If cosmic rays strike the stones with full speed they smash some atomic nuclei to pieces. The resulting free neutrons have a different effect on the human body than cosmic radiation. Depending on their speed they might even be more harmful.

At GSI the scientists now tested how strong the neutron effect is in Moon and Mars regolith and how far it passes through the material. ?I cannot estimate how the material is going to react to the radiation yet," says La Tessa. ?Will many neutrons be produced? How many fast and how many slow ones? This we will know when we analyzed our experiment data."

The tests funded by ESA were coordinated by Thales Alenia Space Italia. The prime contractor of ESA's project also designed the test plan in cooperation with GSI, chose the materials and evaluats the results.

Occupy protesters attempt to ?shut down? Wall Street on anniversary

An Occupy protester screams as he is arrested near Zuccotti Park, Sept. 17, 2012. (John Minchillo/AP)

More than 100 protesters were arrested in lower Manhattan on Monday during demonstrations marking the first anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, the amorphous, anti-corporate greed movement that began in New York and spread to dozens of cities last year.

Activists vowed to "shut down" Wall Street, with plans to create a human wall and block the entrance to the New York Stock Exchange. Hundreds of New York police officers were assembled early Monday in anticipation of the protests.

Dozens of officers, some on horseback, blocked off the entrance to Wall Street to prevent protesters from carrying out their stated mission. At 10 a.m., the NYPD carted off a bus full of protesters, all of them arrested earlier Monday morning. A double-decker bus of sightseers followed closely behind.

Several of the arrested protesters were in wheelchairs. (One smiled as she was loaded into a police van.) At the intersection of Broad and Water streets in the financial district, activists demonstrated in front of a police truck, raising clenched fists in its direction.

[Slideshow: Occupy Wall Street: One year later]

Matt Tucker, a protester from Cincinnati, told Yahoo News that the Occupy movement has found buildings where protesters can sleep. (Zuccotti Park, once the ground zero of the Occupy movement, is no longer an option for overnight camping.) Others slept in front of Trinity Church and Chase Bank over the weekend as part of their protest.

As is often the case with city-based demonstrations, the number of protesters who showed up Monday to mark the Occupy anniversary varied depending on who was counting. Most media outlets estimated several hundred; one protester's estimate?retweeted by Occupy Wall Street's Twitter account?was 50,000. (The tweet was immediately?and rightly?ridiculed.)

According to the New York Times' City Room blog, about 200 protesters gathered in Zuccotti at 7 a.m. A half hour later, approximately 400 protesters arrived at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Water Street:

The police were also visible in large numbers throughout the area. Just after 7 a.m. four officers on scooters followed four bicyclists dressed as polar bears?to symbolize rising water tables resulting from global warming, they said?on their way to an assembly spot outside the Lower Manhattan ferry terminal.

Police who barricaded Wall Street checked IDs of employees to let them through.

A few protesters used markers to write a telephone number for legal help on their arms should anyone arrested need it.?A small band of demonstrators outside the church performed in a drum line. One held a sign that read: "Sorry, Wall Street is Closed Today for Deconstruction."

Some Occupy protesters played drums and marched around behind barricades, even as they were blocked from entering Wall Street. Other splinter groups performed "mic checks" (creating a people's microphone where listeners repeat a speaker's words so others farther away could hear) in the lobbies of major banks, including J.P. Morgan Chase, Citibank and the Bank of America.

The anniversary demonstrations began on Sunday with a concert in Foley Square featuring Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello.

Scientists differentiate chemical bonds in individual molecules for first time using noncontact atomic force microscopy

ScienceDaily (Sep. 16, 2012) ? IBM scientists have been able to differentiate the chemical bonds in individual molecules for the first time using a technique known as noncontact atomic force microscopy (AFM).

The results push the exploration of using molecules and atoms at the smallest scale and could be important for studying graphene devices, which are currently being explored by both industry and academia for applications including high-bandwidth wireless communication and electronic displays.

"We found two different contrast mechanisms to distinguish bonds. The first one is based on small differences in the force measured above the bonds. We expected this kind of contrast but it was a challenge to resolve," said IBM scientist Leo Gross. "The second contrast mechanism really came as a surprise: Bonds appeared with different lengths in AFM measurements. With the help of ab initio calculations we found that the tilting of the carbon monoxide molecule at the tip apex is the cause of this contrast."

As reported in the cover story of the Sept. 14 issue of Science magazine, IBM Research scientists imaged the bond order and length of individual carbon-carbon bonds in C60, also known as a buckyball for its football shape and two planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which resemble small flakes of graphene. The PAHs were synthesized by Centro de Investigacion en Quimica Bioloxica e Materiais Moleculares (CIQUS) at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Toulouse.

The individual bonds between carbon atoms in such molecules differ subtly in their length and strength. All the important chemical, electronic, and optical properties of such molecules are related to the differences of bonds in the polyaromatic systems. Now, for the first time, these differences were detected for both individual molecules and bonds. This can increase basic understanding at the level of individual molecules, important for research on novel electronic devices, organic solar cells, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In particular, the relaxation of bonds around defects in graphene as well as the changing of bonds in chemical reactions and in excited states could potentially be studied.

As in their earlier research (Science 2009, 325, 1110) the IBM scientists used an atomic force microscope (AFM) with a tip that is terminated with a single carbon monoxide (CO) molecule. This tip oscillates with a tiny amplitude above the sample to measure the forces between the tip and the sample, such as a molecule, to create an image. The CO termination of the tip acts as a powerful magnifying glass to reveal the atomic structure of the molecule, including its bonds. This made it possible to distinguish individual bonds that differ only by 3 picometers or 3 ? 10-12 meters, which is about one-hundredth of an atom's diameter.

In previous research the team succeeded in imaging the chemical structure of a molecule, but not the subtle differences of the bonds. Discriminating bond order is close to the current resolution limit of the technique and often other effects obscure the contrast related to bond order. Therefore the scientists had to select and synthesize molecules in which perturbing background effects could be ruled out.

To corroborate the experimental findings and gain further insight into the exact nature of the contrast mechanisms, the team performed first-principles density functional theory calculations. Thereby they calculated the tilting of the CO molecule at the tip apex that occurs during imaging. They found how this tilting yields a magnification and the very sharp images of the bonds.

This research was funded within the framework of several European projects including ARTIST, HERODOT, CEMAS, the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Regional Government of Galicia.

Obama vows to 'never retreat' from world after Libya deaths

President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton walk back to their seats during the Transfer??President Barack Obama led a solemn tribute on Friday to America's slain ambassador to Libya and three diplomatic aides as their remains arrived on U.S. soil days after the bloody attack that claimed their lives. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also honored the fallen, blending evident anguish with grim determination as she delivered a stern warning to Middle East leaders.

The president, speaking to silent mourners in a cavernous hangar at Andrews Air Force Base just outside Washington, D.C., said,?"Even as voices of suspicion and mistrust seek to divide countries and cultures from one another, the United States of America will never retreat from the world. Even in our grief, we will be resolute."

Obama spoke after Clinton addressed a crowd of mourners including Vice President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and his wife, Alma, and families of the deceased: Ambassador Chris Stevens, Information Management Officer Sean Smith and security agents Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. The four were killed in an attack on the American Consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on Tuesday.

Clinton deftly wove in personal details. There was Sean Smith, a passionate gamer mourned not just by his wife and children, Heather and Nathan, but also online by the "countless competitors, collaborators and gamers who shared his passion"; Tyrone Woods, known to most as "Rone," a two-decade veteran of the Navy SEALs turned registered nurse and paramedic; Glen "Bub" Doherty, another former SEAL and paramedic who left behind a wife and three children?including one born just a few months ago. And there was Chris Stevens, who "won friends for the United States in far-flung places."

Clinton added that Stevens "made those people's hopes his own [and now] we will wipe away our tears, stiffen our spines, and face the future undaunted.

"The people of Egypt, Libya, Yemen and Tunisia did not trade the tyranny of a dictator for the tyranny of a mob. Reasonable people and responsible leaders in these countries need to do everything they can to restore security and hold accountable those behind these violent acts," Clinton warned.

"And we will, under the president's leadership, keep taking steps to protect our personnel around the world," she said.

After they spoke, the Marine Band struck up first the national anthem and then "America the Beautiful," their strains filling the hangar as teams of seven Marines in dress uniforms eased the four flag-draped caskets into matching black hearses.

The somber ceremony came after Panetta briefed senators on angry unrest in the Muslim world that has propelled crowds against the outer walls of American diplomatic missions from North Africa to the Mideast and Asia.

Lawmakers emerging from the closed-door briefing described the onslaught as anything but a spontaneous display of religious-themed rage at an anti-Islam film on the Internet?a movie the White House has been blaming for the spike in violence.

"I think it was a planned, premeditated attack," Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) said, according to Roll Call, the newspaper that covers Congress. But he said he did not know who carried out the attack.

"People don't go to demonstrate and carry RPGs and automatic weapons," sad Arizona Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on Levin's committee. "This was not a 'mob' action [or] a group of protesters."

McCain said it was too soon to "indict our intelligence community," but strongly suggested there had been a "failure" to detect the danger and act on it?but allowed that it could have been "one of those things that probably couldn't have been prevented."

Briefing reporters at the White House almost exactly at the same moment, press secretary Jay Carney declared that "we have no information to suggest that it was a preplanned attack."

"The cause of the unrest was a video, and that continues today, as you know, as we anticipated. And it may continue for some time," he said, referring to the Internet film.

Asked repeatedly whether the violence might have other causes?unhappiness at the way the Obama administration has handled the "Arab Spring," for instance, or U.S. policy in general?Carney replied, "We obviously are not polling protesters to find out what their motivations are."

And the spokesman suggested that criticisms of Obama's handling of foreign policy should wait for another day.?"Now is a time when Americans should be coming together," Carney said.

"This is a time when it's in the best interests of the country to focus on the four personnel, the four Americans that we lost in Libya and who are returning home today, and on the measures that we need to take as a nation to deal with the unrest in the region, and deal with the security of our diplomatic facilities and personnel abroad," he said.

"There is certainly ample time and appropriate times to debate foreign policy approaches," Carney added. "We're very proud of the president's record on foreign policy and are happy to make the case at the appropriate time."

Peter Lougheed, defender of Alberta's interests, dies

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Peter Lougheed, the Alberta leader who battled the Canadian federal government's encroachment into the energy industry in the 1970s and 1980s and later became a cautionary voice against unchecked oil sands development, died late Thursday. He was 84.

Lougheed, Progressive Conservative premier of Canada's biggest oil-producing province from 1971 to 1985, was hailed as both a staunch defender of Alberta's interests and patriotic Canadian, best known for butting heads with former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau over energy policy during the era's energy crises.

In a statement, Lougheed's family said he died of natural causes in the Calgary hospital that was named after him. Tributes poured in from across the country.

"He was a driving force behind the province's economic diversification, of it having more control of its natural resources and their development, of Alberta playing a greater role in the federation and of improving the province's health, research and recreational facilities," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement.

One of his most notable creations was the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund, a rainy-day kitty of money extracted from energy revenues that is now valued at C$15.9 billion ($16.4 billion).

Lougheed, a lawyer and MBA who played professional football as a young man, led his Progressive Conservatives to victory in 1971, presenting his team as a young and modern alternative to the long-governing Social Credit Party. His party has been in power ever since in the province of 3.5 million people.

He gained national stature as Trudeau's Liberals sought greater benefits across the country from Alberta's booming energy industry as oil prices surged, marking the start of an East-West political divide that still simmers.

Controversy crescendoed in 1980 following the second global oil shock, when Trudeau introduced the National Energy Program, which regulated oil prices, imposed greater revenue sharing between Alberta and the rest of the country, levied new taxes and promoted more Canadian ownership of the energy industry.

Lougheed retaliated by mounting a legal challenge over jurisdictional control over resources, vowing to slash production and halting new oil sands projects. The Supreme Court eventually sided with the premier, ruling that Ottawa could not impose taxes on oil and gas wells within the province.

The protectionist measures were loosened over time and the program was dismantled by the Conservative government of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney as crude prices sank in 1985.

In recent years, Lougheed took on the role of moral compass for many in Alberta as development of the tar sands, the third-largest crude deposit in the world, pushed forward at a fevered pace, driving up costs, stretching the work force thin and raising concerns around the world over environmental impact.

Though he fostered research to boost production of the vast unconventional resource during his time in office, he clashed over the past decade with more conservative voices by saying that development should be slowed to keep inflationary and environmental effects in check, and that more of the bitumen should be refined within Alberta.

Alison Redford, Alberta's current premier, described him as a friend, mentor and role model. Lougheed supported her election campaign last spring.

"His forward-thinking, progressive vision gave us the tools to succeed today and helped to propel Alberta into a leadership role in Canada," she said in a statement.

CSN: Cutler cracks, points fingers at teammates

    September 14, 2012, 12:35 am

GREEN BAY, Wisc. ? The Bears? organization this offseason gave Jay Cutler the weapons he wanted. GM Phil Emery gave him big wide receivers. The line got back the right tackle he was without last year. Emery got a big backup running back.
    ?
In the end, however, in a game that is defined most often by turnovers, no amount of personnel jiggering can make up for incompetence under center.
    ?
Cutler suggested by performance and action that the apparent positive steps he made over the last two-plus years ? winning his last six starts, a 19-8 record in his last 27 regular-season games ? may yet be more illusion that hard fact.
    ?
Under pressure, both from the moment as well as the Green Bay Packers defense, Cutler cracked. He threw four interceptions to defensive backs that he suggested earlier this week would be unable to match up with the Bears? bigger receivers.
    ?
The problem, however, wasn?t the receivers.
    ?
"It's the same old Jay,? safety Charles Woodson told ESPN?s Rachel Nichols afterwards. ?We just need to be in position. Jay will throw us the ball."
    ?
Cutler simply does not appear to grasp the overall.
    ?
He threw fits as well as interceptions. When center Roberto Garza was late snapping the ball on a first-quarter play, resulting in a delay of game flag, Cutler showed Garza up by petulantly simulating the leg stomp he?d done to signal for the ball.
    ?
He made it apparent how displeased he was with protection breakdowns that contributed to seven Green Bay sacks, yet took no responsibility for holding the ball to the point where he appeared to have lost his nerve and just didn?t want to throw it to receivers he has maintained will win one-on-one matchups.
    ?

He defended his actions, with a terse ?No? to a question whether he had lost any cool or composure at any time in the game.
    ?
?I care about this,? Cutler said. ?This isn?t a hobby for me. I am not doing this for my health. I am trying to win football games and get first downs.
    ?
?When we are not doing the little things, doing things the right way consistently, I am going to say something. If they want a quarterback who doesn?t care, they can find someone else.?
    ?
And somewhere, as fingers are being pointed but no thumb, the question comes to mind: So why would the Denver Broncos have let go of a 26-year-old supposed franchise quarterback and traded him to Chicago?

Ambassador Chris Stevens killed in Libya: Is Arab Spring turning against US?

The flareup of violence in which Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed in Libya shows how the Arab Spring has unleashed forces that are vehemently opposed to America and its ideals.

    By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / September 12, 2012

Muslims pray outside the United States embassy in Tunis, Wednesday, Sept.12, and demand the closure of the embassy. The American embassies in Algeria and Tunisia warned of more protests Wednesday, following attacks by protesters in neighboring Libya in which the US ambassador and three embassy staff were killed.

The killings of the US ambassador to Libya and three other American diplomats in an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi Tuesday underscore how anti-authoritarian revolutions across the Arab world have unleashed extremist Islamist forces violently opposed to America and its ideals.

?The big question for the United States, and it?s only been made more urgent by these events, is how to adjust to a world where [moderate Muslim] governments have paved the way for more extremist elements to wield their influence,? says Patrick Clawson, director of research at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy in Washington. ?It?s not a good dynamic, but it?s not going away and has to be addressed.?? ??

The American ambassador, Chris Stevens, was killed in the same city of eastern Libya where he had set up shop as the US envoy to the Libyan rebels as they fought to oust America?s longtime nemesis, strongman Muammar Qaddafi. Ambassador Stevens and the three other Americans were killed when a mob infuriated by an anti-Islam video made in the US stormed the Benghazi mission and burned it to the ground.

When Stevens was sworn into his post earlier this year, he spoke passionately of the job that lay ahead of building a solid bond between the US and the new Libya that had emerged from the successful revolution against Mr. Qaddafi.

But the fall of Qaddafi?s iron-fisted regime also set free small but growing bands of Islamist extremists who were ready to take advantage of the new freedoms and the slackened security restrictions made possible by the change of government.

Already during the fighting against Qaddafi, the US was concerned about the presence in Libya and across North Africa of Al Qaeda-affiliated groups. But Tuesday?s attack appears to have been instigated by another organization, Ansar al-Sharia, whose followers adhere to the extremely conservative Salafi movement that rejects Western influence and demands a return to strict Muslim practices of past centuries.

Salafi forces appeared to be behind Tuesday?s violent protests at the US Embassy in Cairo as well as the Benghazi attack. The armed mobs were expressing their fury over an amateurish anti-Islamic video that denigrates the prophet Mohammed. The video was made last year in California by someone claiming to be an Israeli-American real estate developer.

Timeline of attack on US Consulate in Libya

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Well-armed Libyan extremists launched a sustained attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Tuesday, killing four State Department employees, including the American ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and foreign service officer Sean Smith, and wounding three others.

The consulate, like all other U.S. diplomatic missions around the world, conducted a pre-9/11 anniversary security check. It found no imminent threat and therefore no need to boost security around the anniversary, according to senior U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the reporting of the incident is still preliminary.

What follows is a rough timeline of the attack on the consulate, according to the officials. The consulate consists of a main building and a nearby annex, each of which are protected by local Libyan guard force, a physical perimeter barrier and a "robust" American security presence inside the compounds. All times are local Benghazi time.

10:00 p.m. Tuesday ? The main consulate building begins began taking fire from unknown Libyan extremists. There are about 25 to 30 employees in the consulate and the annex at the time of the attack.

10:15 p.m. ? Attackers gain access to main consulate building and set compound on fire. In the ensuring chaos, many escape the building, but Stevens, Smith and a regional security officer remain inside. They become separated due to heavy smoke and confusion while trying to evacuate. The security officer makes it outside and he and others from the consulate and annex go back into the building to try to rescue Stevens and Smith. They find Smith dead and pull him out but are forced by the flames, smoke and gunfire to withdraw before they can locate Stevens.

10:45 p.m. ? A group of security officers from the annex try to take the consulate building back from the attackers, but they are repelled.

11:20 p.m. ? U.S. and Libyan forces drive the attackers out of consulate and retake the main building. Everyone rescued is brought to the annex.

Midnight ? The annex comes under heavy fire from the attackers. The shooting lasts more than two hours during which the other two Americans are killed and two Americans are wounded.

2:30 a.m. Wednesday ? Libyan and U.S. security forces retake the annex. Officials believe that Stevens got out or was pulled out of the main consulate building during the battle for the annex and was taken to the hospital. The officials do not know if Stevens was alive when he arrived at the hospital.

6:00 a.m. ? U.S. officials are told that Stevens is dead but are not able to confirm it immediately because they have not seen the body. The body is returned to U.S. personnel at the Benghazi airport at dawn. A chartered plane comes from Tripoli to Benghazi and evacuates all the consulate staff, the wounded and the remains to Tripoli.

They are all going to Ramstein, Germany. The uninjured will stay in Europe pending a security review, the wounded will be treated there at a U.S. military facility and the remains of the dead will be repatriated to the U.S.

In the aftermath of the attack, staffing at the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli has been reduced to emergency levels and the U.S. has requested additional security from the Libyans. Elsewhere, all U.S. diplomatic missions around the world were ordered to review their security postures and take additional measures if needed.
