'Extinct' whale found: Odd-looking pygmy whale traced back 2 million years

Extinct whale found? Well, sort of. Scientists have traced the lineage of the pygmy right whale back to an ancient family of whales called cetotheres, who were thought to be extinct.

The pygmy right whale, a mysterious and elusive creature that rarely comes to shore, is the last living relative of an ancient group of whales long believed to be extinct, a new study suggests.

The findings, published Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, may help to explain why the enigmatic marine mammals look so different from any other living whale.

"The living pygmy right whale is, if you like, a remnant, almost like a living fossil," said Felix Marx, a paleontologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand. "It's the last survivor of quite an ancient lineage that until now no one thought was around."

Living fossil

The relatively diminutive pygmy right whale, which grows to just 21 feet (6.5 meters) long, lives out in the open ocean. The elusive marine mammals inhabit the Southern Hemisphere and have only been spotted at sea a few dozen times. As a result, scientists know almost nothing about the species' habits or social structure.

The strange creature's arched, frownlike snout makes it look oddly different from other living whales. DNA analysis suggested pygmy right whales diverged from modern baleen whales such as the blue whale and the humpback whale between 17 million and 25 million years ago. However, the pygmy whales' snouts suggested they were more closely related to the family of whales that includes the bowhead whale. Yet there were no studies of fossils showing how the pygmy whale had evolved, Marx said. [In Photos: Tracking Humpback Whales]

To understand how the pygmy whale fit into the lineage of whales, Marx and his colleagues carefully analyzed the skull bones and other fossil fragments from pygmy right whales and several other ancient cetaceans.

The pygmy whale's skull most closely resembled that of an ancient family of whales called cetotheres that were thought to have gone extinct around 2 million years ago, the researchers found. Cetotheres emerged about 15 million years ago and once occupied oceans across the globe.

The findings help explain how pygmy whales evolved and may also help shed light on how these ancient "lost" whales lived. The new information is also a first step in reconstructing the ancient lineage all the way back to the point when all members of this group first diverged, he said.

10 Uber Scary Spiders Guaranteed To Freak You Out

Can you get through this post without squirming? We bet you can?t!

Spiders have a big image problem; many of us squirm at the very sight of them. Indeed most spider species are venomous, but the venom is used to catch prey and is often not harmful to humans.

In fact, spiders help us out by consuming many insects we consider pests ? but that does not change the fact that these eight-legged creatures often strike fear into those they approach.

With that said, here is a list of ten uber scary spiders you definitely don?t want to meet:

1. Tarantula

tarantula

Tarantula (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Tarantulas are among the largest of all arachnids. Depending on the specific species, they can be as small as 2 centimeters or as big as 10 centimeters in length, with legs spanning from 8 to 30 centimeters. Although these large and hairy arachnids are known to be venomous, their bites are not very harmful to humans. At most, their bites will only cause several days of discomfort to the skin. The keeping of tarantulas as pets is becoming increasingly popular in many countries.

Like other arachnids, tarantulas usually eat insects and other types of arthropods. However, some larger tarantulas have been known to prey on animals as big as birds, snakes, and rodents. This subset of arachnids can be found in most continents and can thrive in various habitats?such as grasslands, mountains, and forests.

2. Redback Spider

redback spider

Also known as Latrodectus Hasseltii, this species of arachnids is indigenous to Australia and are potentially deadly to humans. I say potentially because their venom, in theory, is deadly. However, only 14 redback-related deaths have been recorded in history?all before the introduction of commercial antivenom in 1956. Nonetheless, most bites from redbacks will cause pain and may require medical care if the pain is severe.

Female redbacks are easily identifiable by their black exterior and a red stripe across the back. Most female redback spiders are only 1 centimeter long and most male redbacks are 3 to 4 centimeters in length.

3. Brazilian Wandering Spider

brazilian wandering spider

Also known scientifically as Phoneutria, this genus of spiders is usually found in tropical locations in South and Central America. According to Guinness World Records, these spiders are the most venomous of all genuses of spiders. Unlike other spiders whose bites are only venomous when hunting or defensive, bites of wandering spiders are almost always venomous. When bitten with enough venom, it will cause an immense amount of pain, impotence, and in very rare instances, even death.

Brazilian wandering spiders vary greatly in size; they can be anywhere from 1 to 5 centimeters long, with legs spanning as long as 15 centimeters.

4. Golden Orb Weaver Spider

These spiders belong to the Nephila genus of spiders and are known for weaving extremely intricate and impressive webs. These spiders vary in the color spectrum; they can be found with bold colors such as red or much mellower colors such as green. Unlike many of the other genus of arachnids, golden orb weavers don?t delineate too much in terms of size; females are about 4.8 to 5.1 centimeters and males are usually around 2.5 centimeters. Golden orb weavers prefer warmer regions and can be found in all warm parts of the world.

5. Huntsman Spider

huntsman spider

Huntsman Spider (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Huntsman spiders are a family of spiders also known as Sparassidae. These eight-eyed arachnids are sometimes referred to as giant crab spiders because of their large size and crab-like colors. The leg span of some huntsman spiders can grow as long as 30 centimeters. These spiders are prominent in Australia, but they are also found in many other countries in Asia. A few species are also found in the southern parts of the United States, where it is hot.

Like most spiders, huntsman spiders have venomous bites. However, their venom is not dangerous to healthy humans.

6. Wolf Spider

wolf spider

Wolf Spider (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Wolf spiders belong to the family of Lycosidae. Their size ranges from as small as 1 millimeter to as large as 30 millimeters. Wolf spider?s 2,300 species reside all over the world, and in many different climates and habitats. Although their bite can be venomous if threatened, the venom will not cause more than swelling, itching, and mild pain in humans. In fact, smaller wolf spiders that live on pastures, fields, and farms actually contribute to the ecosystem by eating insects harmful to grass and crop.

7. Brown Recluse Spider

brown recluse spider

Brown Recluse Spider (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Brown recluse spiders belong to the Sicariidae family, and are known for their venomous and necrotic bites. The size of brown recluse spiders range anywhere from 6 to 20 millimeters in length. These spiders reside in many parts of the southern United States as they prefer warmer climates. Although bites from brown recluse spiders are rare, they can be potentially deadly; a portion of their bites result in necrosis. If the necrotic bites are left untreated, the symptoms will worsen and become gangrenous?which will cause death.

8. Australian Funnel-Web Spider

austrialian funnel web spider

Known in the medical community as Atracinae, these spiders belong to a subfamily of spiders called Hexathelidae. This subfamily of spiders produces some of the most venomous bites out of all the spiders. In fact, Sydney funnel-web spiders are known as the world?s deadliest spiders.

The size of these funnel-web spiders vary; they can be anywhere from 1 centimeters to 5 centimeters in length. These spiders like to live in moist and cool habitats but also like to live under shelter such rocks, shrubs, and logs. These spiders can be found all over Australia, with the exception of Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

9. Mouse Spider

mouse spider

Mouse Spider (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Mouse spiders belong to the genus Missulena and consist of 11 species?all of which are venomous. Ten species are native to Australia and one species is found in Chile. These spiders vary in size, being anywhere from 1 centimeters to 3 centimeters in length. Their dorsal is extremely glossy with broad heads and eyes wide across their foreheads.

Although the bites of these spiders are venomous, serious cases of envenoming are extremely rare. To the contrary, most bites from mouse spiders do not require the use of antivenom to treat.

Another spider, known as Scotophaeus Blackwalli, is also known as Mouse Spider. However, the Scotophaeus Blackwalli does not belong to the same genus and is not venomous.

10. Black Widow Spider

black widow

Black Widow (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Of course what scary spiders list would be complete without mentioning the Black Widow? Also known as Latrodectus Hesperus in the medical community, these spiders live in warmer climates and are usually found in the deserts of the United States. Although black widow spiders are known for their deadly poison, only about one percent of black widows inject poison with their bites. Even if the bite is poisonous, it rarely causes death in humans.

North Korean leader, in rare address, seeks end to confrontation with South

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called for an end to confrontation between the two Koreas, technically still at war in the absence of a peace treaty to end their 1950-53 conflict, in a surprise New Year's broadcast on state media.

The address by Kim, who took power in the reclusive state after his father, Kim Jong-il, died in 2011, appeared to take the place of the policy-setting New Year's editorial published annually in the past in leading state newspapers.

But North Korea has offered olive branches before and Kim's speech does not necessarily signify a change in tack from a country which vilifies the United States and U.S. ally South Korea at every chance.

Impoverished North Korea raised tensions in the region by launching a long-range rocket in December it said was aimed at putting a scientific satellite in orbit, drawing international condemnation.

North Korea, which considers the North and South one country, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is banned from testing missile or nuclear technology under U.N. sanctions imposed after its 2006 and 2009 nuclear weapons tests.

"An important issue in putting an end to the division of the country and achieving its reunification is to remove confrontation between the north and the south," Kim said in an address that appeared to be pre-recorded.

"Past records of inter-Korean relations show that confrontation between fellow countrymen leads to nothing but war," he said, speaking from an undisclosed location.

The New Year's address was the first in 19 years by a North Korean leader, following the death of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-un's grandfather. Kim Jong-il rarely spoke in public and disclosed his national policy agenda in editorials in state newspapers.

MAY BE LINKED TO CALL FOR AID

Kim's statement "apparently contains a message that he has an intention to dispel the current face-off (between the two Koreas), which could eventually be linked with the North's call for aid" from the South, said Kim Tae-woo, a North Korea expert at the state-funded Korea Institute for National Unification.

"But such a move does not necessarily mean any substantive change in the North Korean regime's policy towards the South."

There was no immediate reaction from Washington.

Bruce Klingner, a senior research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation in Washington, said, "Kim Jong-un's New Year's message was different in format but not in content." It offered further evidence the young leader is following in the footsteps of his grandfather, rather than his father, he said.

While the younger Kim's public diplomacy resonates well with the North Korean public, "the new North Korean leader's impact on the outside world is undermined by North Korea's continued provocations and bombastic rhetoric," Klingner said.

The two Koreas have seen tensions rise to the highest level in decades after the North bombed a Southern island in 2010, killing two civilians and two soldiers.

The sinking of a South Korean navy ship earlier that year was blamed on the North but Pyongyang has denied it and accused Seoul of waging a smear campaign against its leadership.

Last month, South Korea elected as president Park Geun-hye, a conservative daughter of assassinated military ruler Park Chung-hee, whom Kim Il-sung had tried to kill at the height of their Cold War confrontation.

Park has vowed to pursue engagement with the North and called for dialogue to build confidence but has demanded that Pyongyang abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions, something it is unlikely to do.

Conspicuously absent from Kim's speech was any mention of North Korea's nuclear arms program.

Stocks turn up on hints of 'fiscal cliff' deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market shot higher on Monday afternoon, in the year's final hour of trading, signaling that investors believe the politicians in Washington will work out a budget compromise to avoid the "fiscal cliff."

The Dow was up 137 to 13,075 in the late afternoon, more than 1 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 and the Nasdaq composite were up by more, with the Nasdaq rising nearly 2 percent.

It was a high note in what had been a choppy day for the market, as choppy as the "fiscal cliff" deal-making that has been yanking it around.

Stocks opened lower and struggled for direction in the morning. They jerked higher at midday, on reports that the bare outline of a deal to avoid the "cliff" had been knit together. Then, they lost some of those gains when President Barack Obama made an early afternoon appearance to say that a compromise was "within sight," but not finalized. Then, in the late afternoon, they shot higher.

The market's indecisiveness overlaid a day of dramatic budget negotiations in Washington. If Republicans and Democrats can't agree to a new budget deal by midnight, then higher taxes and lower government spending will automatically kick in Tuesday ? the so-called fiscal cliff.

That would hurt the economy and could even send it back into recession, many investors believe. But what might hurt more, they add, is the psychological impact of knowing that the government can't agree on a budget.

"We're having a fragile recovery, with the pain of 2008 still fresh on everybody's mind," said Joe Heider, principal at Rehmann Group outside Cleveland. "It's fear of the unknown. And fear is one of the greatest drivers of the financial markets."

The Dow Jones industrial average surged 99 points in midday trading after The Associated Press reported that Republicans and Democrats had agreed on some key aspects of a compromise budget plan. They cooled after Obama made it clear that a deal wasn't done. Then, around 2:45 p.m. EST, they started shooting higher again.

Shortly after 3 p.m. EST, the Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 21 to 1,423 and the Nasdaq composite index was up 57 to 3,017.

Investors' opinions about the "fiscal cliff," and how much it matters, are varied.

Some are unruffled: They're confident that politicians will work out a last-minute deal, as they often do. Or they think that even if the U.S. does go over the "cliff," it would be more akin to the anti-climactic Y2K scare than a true Armageddon. The "cliff's" impact would be felt only gradually, they reason. For example, workers might get more taxes withheld from their first couple of paychecks in the new year, but it's not as if they'd have to pay all their higher taxes up front on Tuesday. And Congress could always retroactively repeal those higher taxes.

Others are more concerned. The higher taxes and lower government spending could take more than $600 billion out of the U.S. economy and send it back into recession. Politically, the U.S. would send a message that its lawmakers can't cooperate. And investors would have no good read on the country's long-term policy for taxes and spending, or how the government plans to eventually trim its deficit.

That's made the fiscal cliff's impact on the stock market uneven. From mid-November through roughly mid-December, the stock market rose more or less steadily, despite the "cliff" looming on the horizon. It wasn't until shortly before Christmas, with still no deal in sight, that the "cliff" finally scared investors enough to send the market down.

Tim Speiss, partner in charge of the personal wealth advisers practice at EisnerAmper in New York, followed the "cliff" negotiations on Monday and wondered if the U.S. would get its debt rating cut again. The Standard & Poor's ratings agency cut its rating of the U.S. government amid similar negotiations in August 2011, when lawmakers were arguing over the government's borrowing limit. S&P said at the time that the "political brinksmanship" highlighted how "America's governance and policymaking (is) becoming less stable, less effective, and less predictable." Its rating cut sent the stock market into a tailspin.

The other major ratings agencies, Moody's and Fitch, have suggested that they might lower their ratings of the U.S. because of the "fiscal cliff."

"That is, unfortunately, the big story," Speiss said.

It's also one of the only stories. There's been little other news to trade on during the holiday season, giving the "fiscal cliff" drama outsized influence. No major companies are scheduled to report earnings this week. The most significant economic indicator scheduled for this week, the government's monthly jobs report, won't be released until Friday.

Trading volume has also been light, with many investors still on vacation. That also makes the market more volatile: With fewer shares trading hands, it can be moved by relatively small trades.

Last week, about 2.2 billion shares traded hands each day on average. Throughout the year, the average has been closer to 3.6 billion.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.76 percent from 1.70 percent late Friday, a sign that investors were moving money into stocks.

Some of the best-performing stocks for the year were those that had been hammered in 2011. Homebuilder PulteGroup, appliance maker Whirlpool and Bank of America all more than doubled over the year, after falling by double-digit percentages in 2011.

Some of the worst performers of the year were Best Buy, Hewlett-Packard and J.C. Penney. All are struggling to keep up with competitors who have adapted more quickly to changing technologies and changing customer tastes. They were all up Monday, but were each down at least 45 percent for the year.

PFT: AP comes up short, but Vikes reach playoffs

Dallas Cowboys v Washington RedskinsGetty Images

For most of the year, Redskins running back Alfred Morris was the other rookie, if that.

Sunday night, he put his name up with John Riggins, or at least Timmy Smith.

Morris ran 33 times for 200 yards and three touchdowns, in the Redskins 28-18 win over the Cowboys. With their seventh straight win, the Redskins advance to the playoffs as the NFC East champion, and will host the Seahawks next Sunday.

The Cowboys? season ends with an 8-8 record.

And it ended thanks in large part to the sixth-rounder from Florida Atlantic.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was obviously ailing (and threw for only 100 yards), so it was on Morris to carry the load offensively.

He did that, and then some, controlling the game from the inside out, even though the Cowboys knew what was coming. It?s the kind of performance that sets up an old school duel with Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch next week.

But even before the playoffs start, it was the kind of game that made Morris part of a rich history of runners.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

1. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had thrown three interceptions in his previous eight games.

His three picks Sunday night will continue to define him, such that the definition changed.

It?s a shame, because he had played so well the last month, and been so good in fourth quarters.

But he may never be able to escape the fact that when it?s time for a play to be made, he ends up making it for the other team. Defensive end Jason Hatcher tried to take him off the hook with a ridiculous penalty at a ridiculous time (the first of the night for the Cowboys), but Romo will remain the focus, as he should.

2. Between the evaluation of Mike Shanahan or the budding genius of his son Kyle drawing up plays for the offense, it?s been easy to miss to work done by Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

Keep in mind, this is a coach that lost his best pass-rusher in Brian Orakpo along with defensive end Adam Carriker two games into the season.

He?s built the thing around London Fletcher, who has battled injuries all year and wasn?t the fastest to begin with. But Haslett dialed up pressure, and it got home enough to keep the Cowboys off-balance.

It?s not an easy thing he?s done, but the Redskins have responded on that side of the ball. They?re not great, but they?ve been good enough, long enough.

3. That said, the Cowboys were running out of numbers and nametags on defense.

They entered the night with a one-armed DeMarcus Ware, then outside linebacker Anthony Spencer went down with an injury in the third quarter, though he?d come back.

They had put inside linebackers Sean Lee and Bruce Carter on injured reserve previously, and lost nose tackle Jay Ratliff to a groin injury.

That many losses to the front seven finally became more than they could bear.

4. The converse of the Cowboys injury plagued defense is the Redskins offensive line, which has been greater than the sum of its parts all year.

Left tackle Trent Williams has first-round pedigree. But left guard Kory Lichtensteiger, center Will Montgomery, right guard Chris Chester and right tackle Tyler Polumbus are the kind of guys you fill in the blanks with.

For the Redskins, they?re a foundation.

Polumbus missed one game with a concussion, otherwise the group has been intact all season. Rookie Josh LeRibeus replaced Lichtensteiger briefly in the third quarter, but they finished the game the way they?ve played the second half of the season.

Together.

5. DeAngelo Hall gave Dez Bryant the ?Back up off me bro? treatment for most of the night.

The Redskins cornerback, who has traditionally been more talk than walk in his career, kept the clamps on the Cowboys star wideout most of the evening.

Bryant finished with four catches for 71 yards?before leaving with an injury, but wasn?t a factor, which your best player needs to be in this type of game.
