US First Lady Michelle Obama begins a six-day visit to southern Africa Monday where she will meet anti-apartheid leaders and highlight the spread of democracy on the continent.

The wife of US President Barack Obama will visit the South African cities of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town and the Botswana capital, Gaborone, starting on Monday evening, June 20 through Sunday, June 26.

She will be accompanied by her two daughters, Malia and Sasha, but not her husband, on a trip that the White House says will focus on "youth leadership, education, health and wellness."

The first lady will also be traveling with her mother, Marian Robinson, and two nephews.

She will visit several places that are symbols of South Africa's decades-long anti-apartheid struggle, according to a schedule put out by the White House.

After meeting Nompumelelo Ntuli-Zuma, the wife of South African president Jacob Zuma, on Tuesday, Obama will visit the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg, where she will be given a tour by Graca Machel, the former first lady of Mozambique and now wife of former South African president Nelson Mandela.

There were no plans announced to visit Mandela, who at 92 is in fragile health, although the White House has left open the possibility of a meeting.

"She will be paying tribute to President Mandela's legacy throughout her visit. She of course would treasure any opportunity to interact with president Mandela, it depends on his ability to receive visitors," said Ben Rhodes, a White House deputy national security advisor.

The next day, Obama visits Cape Town and the former Robben Island prison, where Mandela was held for 18 of the 27 years he was imprisoned.

British Gas customers warned of more price hikes

Families have been told to brace themselves for steep energy price rises this winter by the boss of Britain's largest power company.

Sir Roger Carr, the chairman of Centrica, which owns British Gas, said further increases were inevitable after Scottish Power revealed it would raise prices by an eye-watering 20% for gas and 10% for electricity.

Sir Roger admitted that a reason for the rise was the Government's 'decarbonisation' agenda, which is forcing householders to pay more for 'green' energy.

His warning about the inevitability of across-the-board price increases came as Chris Huhne, the Energy Secretary, showed no sign of backing down over the extra costs imposed by the government's green agenda.

Instead, he told households to dodge the price hikes by 'shopping around'.

Sir Roger said customers should not be surprised that some of the costs involved in 'decarbonising' power generation had to be recouped through higher bills.

'Ofgem [the regulator] has said that it would see over the next decade a dual fee bill going up by ?500 a year for a typical consumer and that's related to decarbonisation rather than market forces,' he said.

His remarks make a mockery of the advice issued by Mr Huhne, a millionaire, who urged customers to 'vote with their feet' while refusing to water down obligations for renewable energy.

Experts say customers are paying 20% too much thanks to 'green stealth taxes'.

Mr Huhne said: 'Consumers don't have to take price increases lying down. If an energy company hits you with a price increase, you can hit them back where it hurts - by shopping around.'

Adam Scorer, of Consumer Focus, said: 'You can incite customers to switch all you want but there is nowhere for them to go.

'It is too difficult for operators outside the "big six" to enter the market and only Chris Huhne or the regulator Ofgem can refer them to the Competition Commission, which so far he has failed to do.'

Meg Hillier, shadow energy secretary, said: 'Chris Huhne and this Tory-led government are talking tough but doing little to protect consumers.

'Clearly, Chris Huhne is not taking these price hikes seriously.'

"Super 8" took the #1 spot at the box office over the weekend. The film's $37 million opening isn't on par with recent summer blockbusters, but it did beat studio expectations, according to reports. And "Super 8" bears the distinction of being the only non-sequel in the weekend's top five.

The "Super 8" marketing campaign employed many of the tactics used to promote 2008's "Cloverfield," which was produced by "Super 8" writer/ director J.J. Abrams. The movie stars a cast of relative unknowns and features a plot that was largely kept hidden in the trailers. Abrams devised "Super 8" as something of an homage to the work of Steven Spielberg, who served as producer.

Reviews have been largely positive. "For all its obvious touches of Spielbergia, 'Super 8' feels a whole lot like 'The Iron Giant' meets 'Stand by Me,' " wrote FEARnet's Scott Weinberg.

"Super 8" was produced by Paramount, which like MTV is owned by Viacom.

The weekend's only other new movie in wide release was "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer," a children's film based on the widely popular series of books by Megan McDonald, who co-wrote the script. The movie opened poorly, landing at #7 with just $6.2 million. And it's one of the worst reviewed films of the year so far, according to critical aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

"X-Men: First Class" was #2 in its second week of release with $25 million for a $98.8 million total. The superhero prequel is the best reviewed of the franchise since 2003's "X2: X-Men United."

Meanwhile, "The Hangover Part II" passed "Fast Five" to become the highest-grossing movie of 2011 thus far. The buddy comedy took in $18.5 million for a $216.5 million domestic total. Critics have largely panned the film, although co-star Zach Galifianakis detailed plans for another sequel in a recent interview with magazine (he did not confirm his involvement).

"Kung Fu Panda 2" came in at #4 at the box office. The animated sequel, which features Jack Black as the voice of the title character, took in $16.6 million for a $126.9 million total. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was #5 with $10.8 million for a $208.7 million total.

This weekend's new releases include "Green Lantern," starring Ryan Reynolds as the DC Comics superhero; "Mr. Popper's Penguins" starring Jim Carrey; and the PG-13 romance "The Art of Getting By."

The player using the new controller can have a different experience than those looking at the TV. This will offer a wide variety of competitive and cooperative opportunities.

In addition to the 6.2-inch screen, the new controller also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers. Adding these features to the Classic Controller? button scheme ? two analog Circle Pads, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons ? will enable a breadth of game-play experiences while appealing to both casual and dedicated video game players.

Wii U combines motion-sensing game play with the ability to support full HD graphics. Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote? or Wii Remote Plus controllers. The system is also backward compatible and can play all Wii games and use all Wii accessories. The Wii console has sold more than 86 million units globally and greatly expanded the overall audience for video games. Wii U aims to expand that audience even further. Developers worldwide are already working on new games and experiences for the console.

A new system update is now available for the Nintendo 3DS system. Users who connect to a wireless broadband Internet connection and install the system update will instantly gain access to the Nintendo eShop, which contains a variety of games and applications for download using a cash-based system.

Users can browse original 3D software, 3D Classics (select classic video games re-mastered in 3D), classic Game Boy? and Game Boy Color games, and more than 350 games and applications currently offered for the Nintendo DSiWare? service. Visitors can also see videos and screen shots for games, plus see how other players rank games.

Nintendo kicked off its E3 Expo Presentation by announcing a number of initiatives to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda. A re-mastered 3D version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches for Nintendo 3DS on June 19, while Wii owners will see the arrival of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in the 2011 holiday season. Additionally, Nintendo announced a tour of orchestral concerts featuring music from the beloved franchise. Additional commemorative activities will be announced at a later date.

E. Coli Outbreak May Boost Argument For More U.S. Food Safety Funds

Tracking the source of the European E. coli outbreak is a worldwide challenge for investigators. It's put the public on edge once again about produce safety.

But it may provide a unique opportunity for U.S. regulators to get Congress to cough up the money to try to prevent these kinds of outbreaks from happening here.

However, in an era where politicians are trying to cut spending, it's not going to be easy.

FDA Deputy Commissioner for Foods Michael Taylor basically made the case at a press briefing today at Ogilvy PR in Washington that outbreaks ? like spilled milk ? happen.

"I think the public has to be realistic about that," he says.

And tracking them to the source is messy.

"It's very difficult to watch, I admit," Taylor says. "I think whenever you have an outbreak this big ... and people are watching blow by blow, you're seeing playing out the uncertainty that the people who do this work ... grapple with in investigating these things."

Remember, just a few years ago, FDA wrongly fingered tomatoes as the culprit for a salmonella outbreak that sickened hundreds, but it turned out that peppers were to blame.

That memory is not too far from the minds of U.S. regulators at this moment, we'd bet.

But Taylor and others say that funding FSMA (FIZZ-ma ? the soda pop nickname for the very serious Food Safety Modernization Act) can help prevent such scenarios from repeating.

Passed last year, the new law gives FDA the authority to, among other things, focus more on preventing outbreaks than reacting to them, both locally and abroad. It also gives the agency new power to detain food that officials suspect of containing harmful pathogens. But so far, it hasn't been funded.

"When we implement this law, we think we can significantly reduce the severity and frequency of outbreaks," he says. "If we make the investment," he adds.

FDA can write the regulations required by the law without new funding, Taylor says.

"What requires new resources is building the system that takes those regulations from being words on the page to actually being a functioning system that really is working in a practical way to make food safer," he says.

Some House Republicans aren't persuaded so far. They have proposed cutting FDA's current food safety budget ? the one that doesn't include FSMA ? by $87 million.

"This subcommittee has begun making some of the tough choices necessary to right the ship," House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) told The Washington Post last week.

But the proposal still has to make its way through the full House and the Senate, where it is likely to meet some resistance.

Taylor says the European outbreak "is a good example of where food safety as a scientific matter is an enormously dynamic challenge. The bacteria themselves change, we know that the food system changes, the way food is produced changes." And FDA needs to be able keep on top of the changes, he says.
