Virgin Mobile: Don't Root Our Android Phones (PC Magazine)

Virgin Mobile doesn't want anyone messing with its Android phones. That means not the manufacturers, and not you, either.

Sprint's prepaid arm, Virgin Mobile, thrilled Android purists last week when it stood up for the "pure Android experience" by saying it would bar manufacturer skins from its smartphones.

But Virgin Mobile doesn't want to be the new home of Cyanogen and its ilk, the company said in response to a question about unlocked bootloaders and rooting.

"We do not endorse in any way end users using a non-officially tested operating system nor do we approve of 'rooting' devices.? This constitutes a violation of our terms of service and puts our network in jeopardy," a spokesperson said. "We endeavor to provide users a customizable Android experience within the limits of the tested and network approved Android OS."

Advanced users typically "root" Android phones to gain access to protected parts of the system the manufacturer or carrier has prohibited users from touching. Many Android fans have developed entire customized offshoots of the OS, such as the popular Cyanogen, which can update phones to newer versions of Android before the official manufacturer release, or cleanse phones of carrier-supplied bloatware.

By demanding stock Android, but also warning against rooting, Virgin is making sure it has the last word on what goes on its Android phones. That means keeping its own apps on phones, and only allowing tested, approved versions of the OS onto its network, but also not having to deal with the extensive customizations that manufacturers such as Samsung sometimes stick on their phones.

While other U.S. carriers also disapprove of rooting, no other U.S. carrier has taken a blanket position against manufacturer skins.
