Former manager says Clemens adapted late in career

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Roger Clemens lost something off his fastball in his 40s but still succeeded by pitching smarter, his former manager testified Thursday.

"He continued to have great success, but for different reasons," said defense witness Phil Garner, who managed Clemens with the Houston Astros from 2004-2006. "He didn't just overpower teams; he outsmarted teams ... He wasn't as domineering as he was earlier."

Clemens is on trial for allegedly lying to Congress in 2008 when he denied using steroids or human growth hormone. Defense lawyers are trying to demonstrate that Clemens used smarts and hard work ? not performance-enhancing drugs ? to post exceptional numbers at an age when most players are retired.

In Clemens' first year with Houston, in 2004, he won his seventh Cy Young Award and posted an excellent 2.98 earned run average, nearly a full run better than the previous season, though most pitchers making that switch from the American to National league improve their ERAs by some fraction of a run. In his second year with Houston, when Clemens turned 43, his ERA dropped even further, to an extraordinarily good 1.87.

Garner said that one way Clemens got smarter was by pitching around really good hitters, then going after weaker ones. Garner said the pitcher's speed dropped from 95-97 mph in his early 30s to 90-92 mph.

"There's no question he had aged," said Garner, who sometimes referred to the pitcher by his nickname, Rocket.

Supporting the defense contention that Clemens succeeded through hard work, Garner recalled seeing the pitcher at the ballpark in spring training at 7:30 a.m. Clemens worked out in a flak jacket with 60 pounds of weights, then went for a run, Garner said.

A couple of times, Garner shouted as he imitated Clemens' competitive outbursts.

"What is going on?!" Garner recalled Clemens yelling at himself as he paced back and forth at the end of the dugout. "Are you going to pitch tonight or are you not going to pitch tonight?! Are you going to get anybody out tonight?!"

On Wednesday, two catchers who were teammates of Clemens said he played with integrity and refused to cut corners, the opposite of the image painted by prosecutors of a man who cheated to gain an edge and then lied about it to Congress.

"I don't think he'd cheat," said former journeyman catcher Charlie O'Brien, who caught Clemens' games for much of the 1997 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. O'Brien portrayed Clemens as such a stickler that he'd refuse to throw scuffed baseballs because he considered it cheating.

The other backstop was Darrin Fletcher, Clemens' catcher with the Jays in 1998. When Hardin said good afternoon, Fletcher replied, "How we doing?" and frequently called the lawyer by his first name.

He said Clemens was a "big strong man" who set the standard for work ethic.

"Did Roger Clemens ever cut corners?" Hardin asked.

"Cut corners?" he replied with a taken-aback look and a smile. "No."

He gave up some of Clemens' trade secrets as a pitcher. Clemens, for example, would purse his lips on the mound to ask for curveballs.

"You're not making a comeback any time are you, Roger?" Fletcher said. "I'm not giving anything away, am I?" Clemens laughed.

Fletcher said it was important to make sure that batters didn't steal signs, because "the whole integrity of the game is ruined if the hitter knows what's coming."

He also testified that he didn't see Clemens at a pool party at teammate Jose Canseco's house in Florida in June of that season, but Fletcher also said he left the party around 1:30 p.m. A government witness recalled seeing Clemens at the party later in the day. One of the charges against Clemens is that he lied when he told Congress that he wasn't at the party at all.

Fletcher drew more laughter when he said it would have left an impression if he had seen Clemens.

"I've always wanted to see Roger in a bathing suit," he said, and Clemens chuckled again.

Clemens joined the Blue Jays at the age of 34 as a free agent after the Boston Red Sox did not re-sign him following the 1996 season. Boston's then-general manager, Dan Duquette, said at the time that Clemens was in the twilight of his career, but Clemens won the Cy Young Award the two next seasons for the Blue Jays.

In that second season in Toronto, Clemens met strength coach Brian McNamee, who says he injected the pitcher with steroids and HGH and testified that he had the impression the Clemens had used steroids previously. The government used its cross-examination of witnesses Wednesday to reinforce its claim that Clemens turned to performance-enhancing drugs to help his aging body recover more quickly during the physically demanding major league seasons.

The defense says it will call McNamee's estranged wife, Eileen, to testify, but her lawyer said Thursday that he wanted to make sure that her previously granted immunity remains intact. That's because McNamee, during his testimony, may have implicated her in a number of areas, such as possible mail fraud. The government had at one point planned to call her as a witness, but decided not to for tactical reasons. Clemens' lawyers want her testimony to help them try to discredit McNamee's credibility. At U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton's urging, Eileen McNamee's lawyer will meet with government prosecutors Friday to discuss the immunity issue.

John Paul Caponigro: Correct Perspective With the App Front View

2012-05-30-1_Perspective_BeforeAfter.jpg

How many times have you wished you could quickly straighten lines in an image that have been distorted by perspective? Being able to control perspective is particularly important for architectural photography and it can be used to make stronger compositions in all images.

How many times have you wished you could control the aspect ratio of an image? Making an image more horizontal, square, or vertical or changing an image from one to another can be a powerful tool for creating more expressive images.

One app will do both -- FrontView.

FrontView offers a cropping tool that helps you control perspective. Its interface allows you to independently position the four corners of the cropping frame. Define a parallelogram instead of a rectangle and an image will be distorted. Position one edge of the cropping frame parallel to a diagonal line you'd like to be straight and the distortion can be used to correct perspective. It can also be used to create expressive distortions.

An inset magnified preview window help's you see the corner you're moving. A dynamic preview for this interface would be a big help in determining and fine-tuning the distortion you'd like to create, but alas currently with this app you'll have to apply an effect to see it and then undo it and try again to fine-tune it. It can also be challenging to position the corners at the edges of your image, which are right at the edges of the iPhone's screen. (Try tapping and pushing the red dot away from you to the edge of the iPhone.)

You also can't position a point beyond the frame of an image, which forces you to crop image information to use it. There's a work around for this. First, expand the canvas (I use the app FilterStorm.) and then use FrontView to crop most of the added canvas. This way you get the perspective control without losing as much or any image information. You can fill in the remaining gaps along the border of an image with cloned information. (I use the app Touch/Retouch.)

2012-05-30-2_CropBig.jpg
2012-05-30-3_Clone_BeforeAfter.jpg

FrontView's Aspect Ratio Tune Up can also change the proportion of an image. This feature's dynamic preview let's you see the changes you're making while you're making them, eliminating the need to apply and undo the effect multiple times to get the final result you want. This is exactly the type of preview we'd like to see with FrontView's perspective control. Aspect Ratio Tune Up is so easy to use that many times you'll find you only use this feature. With this powerful tool you can make any image horizontal, square, or vertical - or simply more so. (Note that FrontView's Aspect Ratio Tune Up distorts uniformly, unlike LiquidScale's content aware distortion that distorts less detailed areas more.)

2012-05-30-4_AspectRatio.jpg

Control of perspective and aspect ratio are two powerful reasons to use FrontView. The limits of believability are potentially your only constraints. The key is remembering that doing this is possible. With practice you can make both strategies an intuitive part of your creative process.

Total Vibration ? Blog Archive ? Home Improvement Tips for Selling ...

Are you thinking of doing some home improvement projects to make your home more valuable? If you have put your house up on the market (or are planning to), it makes real sense to make the house as attractive as you can to people who want to buy it. That isn?t quite as simple as it sounds, however, because there are some improvements that can cost a lot of money and there are others that could send a message you might not necessarily want to sent to potential buyers.

One of the most important things you need to do when you want to sell your house is take care to ensure that all of the important household systems and major appliances work correctly. This includes your heating system, water heater and plumbing. Keep in mind that every single person who wants to buy the house is going to have it inspected and when huge problems come up they will either try to force you to lower your selling price or rethink buying it altogether. Appearance matters too and if your boiler looks like it hasn?t been replaced in a long time, the impression it makes will only be bad. This is also true for the refrigerator. You need every potential buyer to understand that you cared enough about your home to keep all of the important things up to date.

Before you put your home up For Sale, do not buy a bunch of high ticket items or bonuses. In most cases, these will not add enough additional value to the home to justify the out-of-pocket expense. This includes something like a swimming pool or hot tub, which is seen as a luxury item by most people. This is also pertinent to costly landscaping or features in your yard, like a fountain or a Koi pond. That is fine if you happen to own some of these items, but do not go out and spend money on them with the intention of making your home have a better chance of selling. These days, with everyone being so money conscious, people deem these as objects that up the cost of the home. More and more individuals who are in the market to buy a home are not interested in places that have extras like swimming pools, hot tubs and spas, as these are expensive to maintain.

Of all of the rooms in your house, you need to make sure your kitchen looks outstanding every time someone drops by. Your kitchen needs to look absolutely pristine when you are selling your home to another person. It is important to represent your kitchen as being new which means you may have to purchase brand-new appliances and cabinets to present this overall effect. You need to fix it up, but not go crazy in the process. What we mean is you should not buy an overly expensive appliance (like a refrigerator) which might make them think it is out of their league. The same is true for the bathroom. Just make sure everything
is working, and don?t go overboard with a high-end spa bathtub that will scare them off as well.

It?s good sense to take steps to make sure that your house is in the best condition possible when you want to show it to potential buyers. You do not want your potential buyers to have to use their imaginations to see how it can look after it has been repaired, painted and cleaned up. Most people prefer that the house be as close to perfect as possible. The truth is, however, that you need to take all of these ideas under advisement before you can take on any real home improvement projects.

Google Nexus tablet appears in benchmarks, appears to run on quad-core Tegra 3

ASUS's seven-inch MeMo tablet has just ducked under the FCC's gates, but some benchmark results for a purported Google and ASUS team-up could tally with the same device. According to the listing, the Google Asus Nexus 7 will arrive with NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, clocked at 1.3 GHz, while that (presumably) 7-inch screen packs a 768 x 1280 resolution. The hardware specs end there, but thanks to some investigation by Android Police and Rightware, it appears that this mystery tablet is running Android 4.1 -- possibly the version number for Android's next iteration, Jelly Bean. There are several more hints adding credence to these benchmark results, including the fish-based "grouper" codename, which follows the Stingray moniker that was handed to the Motorola Xoom ahead of its reveal. We're just itching to know whether it'll still manage a sub-$300 price-tag.

What Makes Online Businesses Successful | Best Internet Marketing

Starting an online business has become a very popular venture in recent years as more and more people become acclimated to using the Internet in their everyday lives. As little as twenty years ago, the Internet was new to the average consumer and not much more than a novelty; today, it?s rare to encounter a home in the Western world that?s not stocked with at least one computer. Most middle class houses in America have multiple computers at this point.

What this means is that starting an online business can be profitable if done correctly, given the predominance of the Internet in the average household. People who are naturally entrepreneurial or those who have already started a non-internet based business will definitely have a leg up on the rest of the game, but for the right person who?s willing to take appropriate steps to ensure success, starting an online business can be easy, fun, and even profitable.

In general, the differences between online business and traditional businesses are slight but distinct. Here are a few things that potential online business owners should take into consideration before jumping on the Information Superhighway:

Lower start up costs/high effort. One of the greatest things about online businesses is that they typically don?t cost much to get started. There?s no need to rent out a space or pay utilities, and there are lots of free avenues to advertise with over the digital waves. However, don?t be fooled into thinking that ?less money invested means less work,? because nothing could be further from the truth. Online business owners often feel like their computers are grafted onto their hands!

Be a jack of all trades. It?s not good enough just to have a stellar idea or a fantastic service. In order to be successful, you need to be able to do graphic design, understand web server technology, programming, and knowledge of the Internet as a marketing medium. For those that can?t do all of this single handedly, outsourcing is an option, but this raises overall cost.

Think globally. This isn?t opening up a small Mom and Pop store in your neighborhood. The business will be able to reach all corners of the globe, thanks to the Internet. The good part is that this potentially means more business ? the bad part is that owners will have to make provisions for costs such as international shipping, and maybe even pay for translated versions of their websites.

Marketers make the market. There are thousands of ways to market on the Internet, including pay-per-click, viral, drip, social networking, AdWords, and many others. Don?t know what these things mean? Owners of successful online businesses take the time to learn!

Some of these attributes make working online easier, some may prove to be more of a challenge ? but they all make online businesses unique!

Mechanical and Automated Watches: What is the difference ...

In regards to the basics of watches, you will discover not many variations in between mechanical, or hand-wound watches, and automated watches. Each styles are mechanical inside the respect they include numerous going sections and no not involve the utilization of a battery. Nevertheless, there are a selection of styles which rely on kinetic electricity, bodily motion which converts alone into electric power, if you want to function. This may be complicated to some as kinetic energy used in watches isn?t the exact same since the standard kinetic energy that we have been knowledgeable of. Having said that, kinetic vitality could be an essential factor of the view, especially when you are trying to distinguish among which types of watches are mechanical, and that happen to be automatic.

When it comes to automated watches, if it is always worn all over the day and remaining static for the duration of relaxation periods, i.e: rest, the look at will remain at full wind state while in some time the wearer demands it most, that is while in the day. At times of relaxation if the watch isn?t getting put on, the check out will get started to wind down but even soon after eight hours of no-wear, the view will nevertheless be within the reduced portion of energy. On the flip-side, a mechanical look at will commence winding down and if wound while in the morning, will lie in the second 3rd on the electric power curve arrive night.

Today, automated watches are favorite for your number of motives which stem additional compared to the enhanced accuracy of time plus the advantage of being computerized. Innovations in technological innovation have helped to produce specialised automated watches, for example diver?s watches, in which the crown doesn?t want considerably manipulation. Consequently, the seal with the crown experiences considerably less use, creating it much less susceptible to leaking when applied from the h2o. As a result of the implementation of kinetic electrical power, any electricity produced is stored in the mainspring of the view, indicating the wearer will generally have a enjoy that is ready and it also eliminates the danger with the look at jogging out of power at critical moments.

Accuracy is everything- particularly in regards to diver?s watches, but there are a number of factors that may tremendously impact the accuracy of possibly a mechanical or automated observe. In relation to a mechanical observe, if it is wound only once inside of a 24 hour time period, then it can be possible that its accuracy will vary as compared to an automated enjoy. Having said that, in case the wearer is proficient during the ins and outs of his check out, he will be capable of preserve the watches mainspring in a slim variety and most likely pull out the auto-wind. If an automated observe is still left to operate suitable all the way down to the tip of its wind, it?s going to display the exact same inaccuracies like a mechanical enjoy that has not been wound adequate. Gravity also can perform an important piece while in the accuracies of a view, particularly, the way in which the observe is saved in between wears can crank out micro-gravitational pull within the oscillating wheel which often can trigger a watch?s pace to improve or minimize over a period of time.

Whilst their distinctive names may trigger a person to imagine in different ways, the sole real difference between mechanical and automated watch has much more to perform with their look alternatively than their operate. With automatic watches staying normally technological in layout, mechanical watches have remained pretty much timeless and classic in appearance which has helped them to stay a favourite with quite a few watch wearers. However, both sort of enjoy will final the space for the wearer as long as it truly is supplied with the right amount of treatment it necessitates.

The Single Entity Theory: An Antitrust Time-Bomb for Chinese State-Owned Enterprises?

Posted by D. Daniel Sokol

Angela Huyue Zhang University of Chicago - Law School asks The Single Entity Theory: An Antitrust Time-Bomb for Chinese State-Owned Enterprises?

ABSTRACT: In five recent cases involving the acquisitions of European companies by Chinese state-owned enterprises, the European Commission has delved deeply into the relationship between Chinese state-owned enterprises and the wider Chinese State. A common issue in these cases was: did the notifying state-owned enterprise operate independently of the Chinese State or was there scope for the Chinese State to coordinate the behaviour of the notifying enterprise and other state-owned enterprises in the same sector and should they therefore be treated as part of a single entity for the purpose of merger analysis?

To provide an in-depth analysis of this issue, this article first reviews the historical development of the reform of state-owned enterprises and examines their current corporate governance structure. By applying the economic theory of the firm to understanding the concept of undertaking under the EU Merger Regulation, this article reveals the flaws in the European Commission's analysis of this issue. As the single entity theory can be used as both a shield and a sword, the European Commission?s decision on this issue will have far reaching implications for future antitrust cases involving Chinese state-owned enterprises.

Darwinian innovation, social media, and what is next for the Valley and its investment community

There?s been some excellent commentary on the subject of technological innovation in the past few days, and where and how it occurs. As you might expect, Silicon Valley has been the discussion?s in-room elephant. Views of its present, past, and future prominence are as diverse the people who populate it.

The difference of opinions is not cosmetic. In this post, we?re going to check in with Steve Blank, Mark Suster, and Fred Wilson, all who have written on this topic recently, and then come to a synthesis as to which, some, or all of the three are correct.

Is the?Valley a pipe dream for entrepreneurs? Will the future make it as obsolete as an old American Motors? plant? Let?s find out.

Where We Are

Mr. Blank gave a rather blunt interview to The Atlantic that is well worth reading in its entirety. If you have the minute, do so. What follows is my condensed and edited distillation of Blank?s argument.

Silicon Valley is screwed as we know it.

If I have a choice of investing in a blockbuster cancer drug that will pay me nothing for ten years, at best, whereas social media will go big in two years, what do you think I?m going to pick? If you?re a VC firm, you?re tossing out your life science division. All of that stuff is hard and the returns take forever.

VCs are only [...] interested in chasing the billions on their smart phones. The golden age of Silicon Valley is over and we?re dancing on its grave. I feel bittersweet.

What Blank is saying is that as returns for investors have shortened for one technology niche (social/apps/mobile/etc), and remained long for others (science/engineering based projects), where the dollars are heading is tilted. And as the investment direction changes, Silicon Valley shifts what it builds. Hence Blank?s point that the locale is over from the perspective of what it used to be, and that the age of Facebook and its ilk is upon us.

That may sound odd, given that what the corporate (mass) media and most laypeople think of as Silicon Valley is just that at the moment: social software. However, that?s just the current instant. Let?s talk to Fred.

Fred Wilson, the thinking man?s venture capitalist, all around nice guy, and a person whose respect has been earned, wrote a fascinating article the other day under the title ?The Darwinian Evolution of Startup Hubs.? We?ll get to its larger gist in a moment, but it?s time right now to chase a pedigree. Here?s how Fred views the Valley?s life, since its ?inception:?

In my mental model of Silicon Valley, the first ?tree? was Fairchild Semiconductor (founded in 1957) which begat Intel (founded 1968) which begat Apple (1976) and Oracle (1977), which begat Sun (1982), Silicon Graphics (1981), and Cisco (1984) which begat Siebel (1993) and Netscape (1994), which begat Yahoo! (1995) and eBay (1995), which begat Google (1998) and PayPal (1998), which begat YouTube (2005), Facebook (2004), and LinkedIn (2003) which begat Twitter (2006) and Zynga (2007), which begat Square (2010), Dropbox (2008), and many more.

Critical in that list is what Blank would probably call the tipping point. Observe the shift that happens between Cisco, and Netscape. There isn?t another hardware play until Square, which only half counts. Of course, Facebook and Google are huge builders of servers, but that?s not their product; it?s how they deliver it.

Blank seems to have a point, at least according to our current progression: technology in the Valley has moved from building things to shipping code that went from enterprise-focused (Siebel), to consumer-oriented, such as Facebook.?And thus we reach Blank?s conclusion: the old Valley is dead, and Facebook rocks.

Looking at Wilson?s pedigree, Blank?s point about profitability cycles, from an investor standpoint, is also likely true. I?ll leave that for you to untangle, as I don?t want to bog this post down in math [I would love to run the figures - email me if you want me to - if there is enough demand, I?ll do a second post].

Now, the question becomes ?so what?? So what that Facebook?s IPO is a fucking flagstaff in the middle of the corpse of what the Valley used to be?

So What?

As it turns out, some folks couldn?t be more pleased about the change. This might underscore Blank?s contention, but the low cost of building a social/app/mobile product means that more little companies can be launched, creating the potential for more total successes. Even more, returns are now faster, making LPs, VC partners, and entrepreneurs happy.

Enter Mark Suster, and his 7 points as to why ?It?s Morning in Venture Capital.? Again, read this whole post, please. I?m merely extracting part of its juice for my use here, and more than I feel comfortable quoting without asking you firmly to pass the original a pageview or two. Mark, take it away:

Looking ahead at the next decade I am excited by what I believe will be viewed as one of the best and most rational investment periods for venture capital due to seven discrete factors:

1. The number of startups being created has increased by an order of magnitude
2. The number of venture capital funds has shrunk by two-thirds
3. There are 20x more consumers online
4. We?re online all the time and at high speed
5. Mobility really changes everything
6. Everybody is now payment ready
7. We?re all socially linked

Of course, Mark Suster is based in LA. Does that change the efficacy of his points in regards to what the Valley is going to build? No. The reason why he has decided to live in the worst city in the United States is beyond comprehension, but his points as to why VCs may be excited about the next ten years are unaffected.

Note, however, how he describes the market: online, payment ready, and at high speeds. In short, Suster is looking at the market through the lens that Blank outlined as something other than what the Valley used to be.

Another pre-rebuttal: haven?t I merely selected a venture capitalist that works in the social/mobile/app space, and held him up as a symbol of the whole VC market? Isn?t that a bit, well, bullshit? Sure, but read his points again, and compare them with Blank?s argument. The dollars will flow, as Blank states, to where the opportunity is fastest, and perhaps, biggest, which is what Suster outlines. The two combined paint a pretty simple picture.

Now, all of this is most dangerous if we lose, entirely, the old tech. The life sciences. The next Cisco. Biotech. That sort of thing. Is there a point of no return? I wouldn?t think so, but over time expertises shift, and if we promote and feed venture capitalists of only one flavor in the Valley, it will take some time to undo.

But where did all that physical tech come from? We have to return to Fred Wilson for an answer:

The transistor was invented in the late 1940s and by 1958 we had commercial startups working on the technology. So if this revolution is anything like the last, the next big thing will be invented any day now and within a decade or two we will be on to the next technology revolution.

That?s where Fairchild started from, eventually begetting Square, in a way. Is it right to say, then, that we are merely moving forward, that each progression is the next progression? Semiconductor tech replaced (roll with that assertion, please) something before it, right? So isn?t the bumping of other science technology from the VC roles, taking those funds and applying them to social, just simple evolution?

The Other Tech

Yes, it is. The problem with that, in a pure sense, is that we still use all that old stuff, in better forms. The companies that came after have hoovered up the cash, but we still need innovation at the thicker branches of that tech tree that the new stuff has grown from.

But that doesn?t mean that such work has to take place in the Valley itself, incidentally. As is obvious in market dynamics, especially when contemplating the rules of market demand and investor supply and?entrepreneur?ability under a globalized economic model, it will come back, just somewhere else. By that I mean, we still need someone to invest in that ?other? stuff, and that eventually, someone will. As we have noted, however, if we hyperfocus on the Valley, we?ll be a damn proverbial one trick pony.

That means ceding huge slices of potential innovation and profits to other locales, and likely, other countries.

Science is not dead in the United States. As Blank notes in that interview that we have now pilfered far more than is polite:

I teach science and engineering. I see my students trying to commercialize really hard stuff. Thank God we have small business research grants from the federal government, otherwise the Chinese would just grab them.

In short, the US government continues to pump money into certain technology firms. It doesn?t always work (see: Solyndra), but sometimes it does (SpaceX, Tesla).

Woah, I hear you having that complaint out loud, so I?ll tend to it now. How can we kvetch about the Valley, when SpaceX and Tesla are born from PayPal seed money and are Silicon Valley companies? An excellent point. My response: It?s impossible to draw big trends from individuals. Musk is an anomaly on a scale that we haven?t seen since Jobs and Gates, period. What he is doing is almost beyond comprehension. His double life between a space company and a car company makes Jack?s Twitter and Square dance look like a regular job (in my humble opinion, of course, much love, Jack).

But the market is Darwinian, and thus someone else will invest dollars in hard tech. If we depend on the US government to make those investments, alone, in the States, we are asking to lose that race.

What All This Means

Still, it?s not all bad. If the rest of the world wants to make the longer, harder bets, and we can make all the fast, simpler ones, don?t we win in the end? That comes down to a question of foundations. Do the companies that are currently the darlings of the Valley build foundations? It?s an open question.

Instagram, instead of building a long-term company that could have trained oodles of top talent for the future, will likely remain a smaller affair, later folded into the giant that ate it out of fear. Fred speaks on the phenomena:

If you drill down a bit deeper, you see that the founders, investors and early employees generate a tremendous amount of wealth from these big successes. The later employees don?t make as much wealth but they do learn a ton and make enough money that they don?t need to work for someone else and so they strike out on their own and are often funded by the folks who made the big money in the prior startup. That?s how the seed drops from the tree and starts a new tree growing. This continues on and on and on.

But what happens when you don?t have that long maturation process, with the top dogs essentially curating the crop of people that they are going to invest in? I?m not sure, but I don?t think that it would lead to an improvement of how things have worked. At the same time, calling down what is changing the present as lackluster simply because it doesn?t mirror the past is a fool?s errand. You can make up your own mind here.

Still, the idea of ?from whence? is important. As Fred Wilson demonstrated, it?s how we go to where we are today. This is no idle question. It could be an existential one.

Therefore the future, as you might have expected, is a bit unclear. But the idea that technology and the Valley is constricting to a single niche, or corporate variety, I think is troubling. If we all chase the same goose, most of us lose, and only one animal is encaged. All bits and bytes and pieces of motherboard in a single basket is hardly a good diversification strategy.

Then again, the Darwinian model has given us the fastest technological change ever witnessed by man. There?s something to that.

What we need is for someone to write a book that traces technology from Manhattan Project, to today. That would likely provide us with the context that we need to properly decide if we are making wise choices for the future.

Fred hits this perfectly:

But of course, all of this is conjecture. History doesn?t repeat itself. But it does rhyme. That comes from Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain). One of my favorite people ever.

Mine too, Fred.

Astronauts float inside SpaceX Dragon capsule

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Sat May 26, 2012 12:25pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Astronauts aboard the International Space Station opened the hatch and floated inside a Space Exploration Technologies' Dragon capsule on Saturday, the first privately owned spaceship to reach the orbital outpost, NASA said.

Running ahead of schedule, station commander Oleg Kononenko and flight engineer Don Pettit opened the hatch to Dragon just before 6 a.m. EDT (1000 GMT), NASA mission commentator Josh Byerly reported from Mission Control in Houston.

The bell-shaped capsule, which was making its second test flight, arrived at the space station on Friday.

The crew wore protective masks and goggles, but the interior of Dragon, which is 350 cubic feet (10 cubic meters), about the size of a large walk-in closet, proved clean.

"There was no sign of any kind of (debris) floating around," Pettit radioed to Mission Control, adding that Dragon "smells like a brand new car."

"It looks like it carries about as much cargo as I could put in my pickup truck," Pettit later told reporters during an in-flight press conference.

"There's not enough room in here to hold a barn dance, but for transportation of crew up and down through Earth's atmosphere and into space, which is a rather short period of time, there's plenty of room in here for the envisioned crew," Pettit said.

Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, is working on a seven-passenger version of Dragon, which could be ready for test flights in 2015.

The capsule at the space station carries about 1,200 pounds (544 kg) of food and other supplies for the station, all non-essential items because NASA and SpaceX did not know beforehand if it would actually make it to the station.

Following Tuesday's launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, Dragon had to demonstrate that it could be commanded and controlled by operators on the ground as well as by the orbiting space station crew.

Dragon and SpaceX mission control in Hawthorne, California, aced two days of precision flying and systems tests, clearing the way for Dragon to fly within reach of the station's 58-foot (17.7 meter) robot arm on Friday.

Astronauts snared the capsule at 9:56 a.m. EDT (1356 GMT) Friday as the two spacecraft zoomed around the planet at 17,500 mph (28,164 kilometers per hour). It was anchored into a berthing port on the station's Harmony connecting node a few hours later.

"You made history today and it firmly locked us into place and locked the future direction of the American space program in place," NASA administrator Charlie Bolden radioed to the crew later on Friday.

NASA's use of commercial spaceships to fly cargo - and eventually astronauts - to and from the station will ""revolutionize the way we carry out space exploration," Bolden added.

SpaceX and a second company, Orbital Sciences Corp, hold NASA contracts worth a combined $3.5 billion to fly cargo to the station.

Orbital plans to debut its Antares rocket and Cygnus capsule later this year.

NASA is reviewing proposals from at least four firms, including SpaceX, seeking funding under a related program to develop spaceships for flying astronauts as well. Awards are expected in August.

Since the retirement of the space shuttles last year, the United States is dependent on Russia to fly crews to the station, a $100 billion project of 15 nations. It hopes to break the Russian monopoly, which costs NASA about $400 million a year, in 2017.

Once unloaded, Dragon will be filled with about 1,300 pounds (590 kg) of equipment and science gear that need a ride back to Earth - the first big return load since the final shuttle flight last July.

Dragon is due to depart the station on Thursday and splash down in the Pacific Ocean about 250 miles off the coast of southern California later that day.

Doctor Note-Taking Style Could Affect Patient Care: Study

The way your doctor takes notes could affect the way he or she cares for you, a new study suggests.

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association shows that doctors who take patient notes by dictating them give lower quality of care to their patients, compared with doctors who take notes via "structured documentation."

Structured documentation is when the notes are taken and separated by section (like "family history" or "present illness"). Dictating is defined as reading information over a phone, which is then transcribed to an electronic record.

"Dictating may be easier for the doctor, but patients need to be careful," study researcher Dr. Jeffrey Linder, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said in a statement. "Doctors who dictate may not be paying as close attention to information and alerts in the electronic health record that are important for patient health."

The study included 18,569 visits by 7,000 people. People in the study had diabetes and/or coronary artery disease.

Among the 234 doctors who saw these patients, 9 percent of them dictated their notes, 29 percent of them took notes using structured documentation, and 62 percent typed "free-text" notes (where there's just one window to type down information, a la free note-taking).

Thirty days after the visits, the researchers looked at how the patients were cared for with 15 different measures.

They found that care quality was worse for patients whose doctors dictated the notes, particularly in the areas of documenting patient use of tobacco, diabetic eye exams and antiplatelet medication.

Just last year, a study was published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine showing that 90 percent of people want to know what their doctors wrote in their patient charts, TIME reported.

However, the study also showed that more than half of doctors surveyed wouldn't want to make their notes available for patients to view electronically for one year, according to TIME.

Dealers Required to Share Bad Credit History for Auto Loans ...

Bad Credit

Consumers taking on auto loans have maintained a protection as ordered by a U.S. District Judge yesterday. Auto dealers, who recently fought their responsibility in sharing bad?credit history with consumers who face higher interest rates but finance through third-party lenders, lost the battle.

Dealers Required to Inform Borrowers Seeking Auto Loans

U.S. District Judge Ellen Huvelle issued a ruling on Thursday?that maintained guidelines?for auto dealers looking to charge their customers interest on auto loans due to a bad credit history.

After a tough debate between the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA)?and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Huvelle ruled that auto dealers must tell buyers they have negative information on their credit report for all auto loans issued.

Prior to Huvelle?s ruling, the law required that auto dealers who offered loans had to tell buyers if they?d have to pay more in interest because of flawed credit history. The?NADA argued the law exempted sharing the information if the loan was originated by a third-party lender like a bank or finance company, instead of through dealership financing.

The FTC argued that auto dealers are still responsible for sharing the information with consumers and Huvelle agreed. As a result, dealers will still be required for providing the notice.

Bad Credit History Doesn?t Have to Result in Excessive Rates

Taking on auto loans can be challenging if you have a bad credit history. Not only do you have to contend with higher dealer interest rates, but in many cases, you have to hope you will be approved for a loan at all.

The good news is there are some ways to reduce your chances of being stuck with excessive interest rates when financing a car and?each one involves?avoiding dealership financing. Here are some tips to consider:

  • Talk to your credit union: While your credit union looks at your credit history to determine eligibility for an auto loan, the rates on credit union auto loans are usually much cheaper than those you?ll be offered at a dealership.
  • Consider peer-to-peer lending: There are several reputable peer-to-peer lenders that help you find individuals willing to dish out personal loans at interest rates much lower than what an auto dealer would offer.
  • Look at your home equity: Another option to consider is acquiring a home equity loan that can help you secure a low interest rate and even possibly give you a tax break. Of course, if you are unable to repay your loan, you could lose your car and home, so take this option at your own risk.

If you are interested in securing an auto loan with a dealer, it?s important to know they?re now required to share your bad credit history as a reason that your rate is high, no matter who finances the loan. It?s even better to know that you could secure a more affordable loan by looking into other options.

Air Conditioning Maintenance At B & B Muffler and Automotive In Austin

Most Austin area car owners don?t service their air conditioning until after it fails. Maintaining your sedan air conditioning system means that you always have enough refrigerant to properly do the job. Small leaks in the air conditioning system allow the refrigerant to escape and the system can?t cool the air as well.

Along with the refrigerant, a special oil circulates in the system. The oil lubricates air conditioning components, and keeps the seals resilient. Low refrigerant and lubricating oil means that the air conditioning parts will wear out prematurely, and we all know that air conditioning repairs can be costly in Austin.

Air conditioning service at B & B Muffler and Automotive in Austin starts with a visual inspection of the components for signs of damage or leaks. The compressor is driven by a belt from the engine, most often the serpentine belt, so it?s inspected for cracks or wear.

The air conditioning compressor and other components are checked for proper operation by your B & B Muffler and Automotive service advisor. Then comes the leak test. If a leak is detected, often in a hose or connection, it?s repaired and the sedan system is retested. Your B & B Muffler and Automotive technician will also perform a temperature drop test.

If needed, the old refrigerant is evacuated and the system is recharged with clean, fresh refrigerant. A final test insures that the air conditioner is working, and you?re on your way.

How often this should be done at B & B Muffler and Automotive varies from vehicle to vehicle. Your sedan owner?s manual will have the manufacturer?s recommendation and, of course, your honest B & B Muffler and Automotive service advisor can tell you. It?s typically every two years.

Visualize and Score? BIG!

Jared At Bat. Photo: Erica Angiolillo

Jared At Bat. Photo: Erica Angiolillo

I love optical illusions. They make me feel clever if I can figure them out and even when I have to peek at the answer, it?s still fun to find out how my brain was tricked. But do they serve any purpose in the real world? Can we use them to make us sharper in our everyday lives? Well if you are an athlete or just play sports for fun on the weekends then the answer may be yes. Using illusions to your advantage may help you hit the free throw, putt the ball in the hole in less strokes or even successfully knock one out of the park.

Coaches and athletes have used visual training and perception modification for years. One such method is known as ?quiet eye.? If you recall the scene of any cliche baseball movie you can remember when the player at bat focuses on the pitcher?s ball and all of his surroundings seem to dull. The yells from the screaming fans are put on mute, his gaze on the ball seems unbreakable and as a bead of sweat rolls down his forehead in slow motion he swings and crack! He hits the impossible pitch. Grand slam!

Quiet eye refers to the athlete?s ability to point the center of his vision at the ball, rim or goal and not let it go, ignoring all distractors around him. Previously studies have implied that when this is done, it may make you perceive the object of regard as bigger which can mean you are waiting for the pitcher to throw a gigantic baseball the size of a boulder. Ok, well not that big, however, a recent study demonstrates that visual illusions can be used to manipulate our surroundings, altering the way objects are perceived which may enhance or hinder our performance.

size-illusionWitt et al. conducted a study in which they projected circles of light around a hole on the golf green. When the circles of light were bigger and fewer, the participants in the study actually had more trouble putting the ball into the hole than they did when the hole was surrounded by many more, smaller circles of light.

This setup borrows from the size illusion that the center circle (in this case, the hole on the putting green) will appear smaller if surrounded by fewer, relatively big circles and it will appear bigger if surrounded by many more, smaller circles. And the results? The participants were indeed able to putt more balls in the hole when the center circle (hole) was set up to be perceived larger.

Coincidence or the power of visual illusions and perception hard at work? I?ll let you know once I get back from the mini golf course with my can of white spray paint. I?m kidding.
