Links: UA absent at NBA Draft, baseball starting a dynasty and comparing Solomon Hill to past Wildcats

Since 1988, the Arizona basketball program has produced NBA draft picks in 20 of 24 years. So when the 2012 NBA Draft gets rolling at 4:30 p.m. PT today, it'll be a weird case of the Wildcats lacking representation.

Bruce Pascoe breaks down the likelihood of Kyle Fogg or Brendon Lavender being taken in the draft, and that likelihood is pretty low considering the depth of this year's crop of players. After all, high-profile talents like Washington youngster Tony Wroten Jr., Oregon State star Jared Cunningham, and national championship game star Doron Lamb of Kentucky could all fall out of the first round. But that doesn't mean Fogg and Lavender don't have their sights set on making an NBA roster. In Fogg's case, a Summer League invite isn't out of the question, but the more interesting projection is that of Lavender. The role player for the Wildcats has a more NBA-level athleticism and size as a defender, but it's his three-point accuracy that is opening scouts' eyes.
Sports Illustrated's baseball insider, Albert Chen, believes that Arizona baseball could be just beginning what turns into a dynasty, and much of it has to do with coach Andy Lopez's small-ball approach that developed in the first season at Hi Corbett Field. Chen's recap of the final College World Series gamediscusses James Farris conquering 10 episodes of Workaholics that helped him calm his nerves before his victory that sealed the national championship for UA. He also writes that Brandon Dixon sort of called his big-time hit, his only knock in the CWS.

Patrick Dorsey of ESPN made a word cloud of the most successful mascots to win championships in the 2011-12 season, and taking from former Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood's catch-phrase, "It's a great day to be a Wildcat."

Solomon Hill has eerily similar statistics to former Arizona stars Luke Walton and Andre Iguodala, according to Rush the Court. Like those two icons, Hill led the Wildcats in rebounds and assists. He also is a better three-point shooter than the current NBA players and gets to the foul line at a much higher rate. While his much higher win shares is likely an attribute of this year's squad being not-so-good, it's arguable he would have similar scores had he played on Walton and Iguodala's teams. And it's a good bet his assist numbers would increase as well.

With baseball's national championship, Arizona moved up in the final Director's Cup rankings, finishing in 19th place, writes Anthony Gimino.

Georganne Moline, Arizona's 400-meter hurdler, has a shot at earning an Olympic berth as Patrick Finley writes in this column. Head track and field coach Fred Harvey might shed some tears if she does.

The Rose Bowl is sticking to its schedule in the revamped BCS.

ESPN Pac-12 blogger Ted Miller thinks there is hope for the Wildcats' offense but a lot of questions on the defensive side of the ball coming for Arizona in the first year under head coach Rich Rodriguez. Nothing is surprising there. Kind of similar to my breakdown of best and worst positions on the team. The biggest problem? The lack of any pass rush.

HBT: Stanton will be in Home Run Derby

I don?t really care that much about the competition aspects of the Home Run Derby. I do, however, like to see mammoth blasts for their own sake, either in sheer distance or in quantity. After all, what?s the most memorable Home Run Derby thing ever? Josh Hamilton putting on the laser show at Yankee Stadium, right? ?Well, he didn?t even win the competition that year, so who cares?

Which means that fame of the player or even home run count at the break doesn?t mean much to me as far as that competition goes. Just give me big strong dudes, even if they?re merely Wily Mo Pena-style BP-only guys.

Giancarlo Stanton is certainly better than that ? he?s sporting an .886 OPS right now ? but given what he?s done in BP and on random home runs over the past couple of years, he should be in the Derby whether he?s an All-Star or not. Which makes this, from Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, welcome news:

Giancarlo Stanton?landed a ball in the center-field, upper-deck seats at Marlins Park during batting practice Wednesday, leaving his disbelieving teammates shaking their heads. The Marlins? 22-year-old slugger will be putting his power on display for an entire country to see on July 9 when he takes part in the Home Run Derby in Kansas City.

Stanton confirmed that he was chosen to participate.

?We?re in there,? he said as he trotted off the field following batting practice.

I predict many fountain shots at Kauffman Stadium.

GETTING CHIC WITH YOUR HOMESCHOOL - Homeschool Chic

WOW!? I can?t believe I?m in the final days of this pregnancy (due date is only 4 days away)!!!? This pregnancy was God?s greatest surprise gift to me EVER, even though in the beginning I never thought I?d be able to see it as a blessing.? However, this pregnancy changed SO much for me, especially with homeschooling, that I will forever be grateful for the timing and the sweet babe that brought my heart fully back home.

On Sunday my husband, who has normally been so kind about my size and has agreed with me when I tell him that I?m really not that big, said, ?you?re GINORMOUS!!? Seriously, Quinn, your belly is HUGE.?? Thanks, sweetie!? :)

However, this is my 6th pregnancy in 7 years and I?m expecting our 5th child (yes, there was a heart-breaking miscarriage in the middle of all those years), so I?m celebrating the fact that this baby is so big and healthy that my belly is ?ginormous.?? This is the first pregnancy that I?ve been this healthy for and I believe this will be our biggest, healthiest baby yet!? We?re hoping for some major chub on those tiny arms and legs!? So exciting!

9+ months ago I thought my life was FANTASTIC!? After our family struggling financially for a few years, I was finally experiencing great financial success!? I was busy building some business endeavors that I was extremely excited about and that were going so well that I was making thousands of dollars a month.? I was having my mom nanny and partially homeschool my kids several days a week, which was something I had always thought sounded like a working + stay-at-home-mom bliss.? I was getting asked to speak at really incredible venues and my company was really taking off.? Overall, I felt like I had arrived, or at least almost arrived, because I was receiving praise and respect from the outside world and felt like I was doing a really decent job balancing everything with caring for my family.

At one point I even compared myself to Abraham of the Bible, feeling like the Lord was asking me to put my family on the altar to sacrifice.? Finally, it seemed the angels were making everything work out so I didn?t have to sacrifice them; my work outside our home could even save them!

Boy, was I blind!!

Then one night after I had lost my temper and screamed at my kids and husband to clean up the toy room disaster, my husband asked if I thought I should take a pregnancy test.? Defiantly, I laughed in his face and told him that of course I wasn?t pregnant (we had been preventing), but I?d take the test just to prove it to him.

Yup, two pink little lines quickly proved me wrong.? We were pregnant? again.

I was devastated after hearing the news.? Most of all, I was angry at God.? How could He do this to me?? It didn?t take long for my energy to wane and for it to get next to impossible to keep up the lifestyle and workload I had created for myself.? Slowly I got fewer and fewer clients and projects and part of me was completely relieved because I was so overwhelmed at trying to do it all.? However, overall I still felt like a failure and was so confused at why God would allow another baby to come and interrupt all the good things I had going for me.

I was also horribly embarrassed and didn?t want to tell anyone about the pregnancy for fear of what they?d think of me.? Already with the previous pregnancies I?d heard all sorts of ?fun? banter like, ?aren?t you always pregnant?? ?what is this, like your tenth pregnancy?? and ?every time I see you you?re pregnant.?? Ha-ha? so funny and so original.? ;)? I never wanted to be seen as a mom first.? I wanted to be seen for all the other value I felt I had to bring to the world.? I wanted to be seen as intelligent and gifted.? I wanted my talents to be highly-sought-after.? I felt like the more ?motherly? I appeared, the less I would be valued in the world.? However, with every pregnancy ?motherhood? got a little more difficult to hide.

All of this brought me to my knees, begging the Lord to help me understand and be happy about this pregnancy and receiving another baby in our family.? I begged Him to change my heart so I could desire the things that would truly bring me and my family happiness.? I begged Him to strengthen my faith in Him so I could trust His will and do it, no matter what it would be.

The Lord heard and answered my prayers and brought out the most incredible transformation within my heart that I will never, ever be the same again ? thank goodness!? Truly, He brought my heart fully back home.

As my heart was transforming, I woke up to the reality that I had been living in and it was upsetting.? I saw how distracted I had been from my children, how I almost didn?t really even know them very well.? I saw how much of their lives I had missed by not being present and by being focused outside of our home.? I saw how my intentions with them were always wrapped around how to keep them busy, so I could do what I wanted.? It all broke my heart to see the truth of what I had allowed my life to become, amidst seemingly good intentions.

Bit by bit, the Lord held my hand and helped me reclaim motherhood.? I began looking for ways to really connect with my children.? I began truly listening to them whenever they talked to me.? Many days I?d just sit and stop amidst the daily routine and tears would come to my eyes as I?d see these beautiful children in my life and would feel so overwhelmed with gratitude for the privilege of being their mother.? Their hugs and kisses meant so much more and I treasured each one because I felt like I almost didn?t deserve their tender, forgiving love.

As I transformed, my family became absolutely central in my life.? Nothing else mattered.? All I wanted was to soak up every second I was blessed to be with them.

Because of this, I shut down my business endeavors and let go of all aspirations to build a thriving business.? I completely stepped out of the business world altogether.? We didn?t think we?d be able to afford to stay in our home anymore without me working, so I let our home of 6+ years go and we downsized considerably to take our family to live in a 3 bedroom apartment instead.? Our plan was to rent out our home instead.

At the apartment, our homeschool absolutely came alive!? I feel as if I was learning how to homeschool all over again.? It was incredible!? My kids would say things like, ?you?re here with us!? to which I?d think, ?haven?t I always been??? Whenever I was working previously, I was at home with them, but I see now that I wasn?t really present.? My body may have been there, but my mind was not.

Throughout our time living in the apartment, I finally was able to create the house of order that I?d always dreamed of.? We were eating meals together as a family, having clean laundry to wear and playing together every day.? My kids were so happy that they didn?t seem to mind having such a smaller space to live in.? They absolutely loved having their mom fully in their life and that trade off was worth any sacrifice.

Through a miraculous string of events, the Lord led us back to our home where we are now currently living, preparing to receive our precious, little baby #5.? Our home is still in order and we are a stronger, more connected family than ever before.? Homeschooling is thriving, also, as we?re eagerly planning out our homeschooling adventures to pursue for the next school year.

How grateful I am for the Lord transforming my heart and my desires so I could receive all of the joy and love that had always been surrounding me but that I had been too distracted to ever see and experience for very long.? Now, I hold motherhood as my greatest privilege and blessing!? I LOVE being a mother and my children are truly my jewels!? No matter what could happen for our family financially or otherwise, we (I) now fully trust the Lord to lead us.? I?m so grateful for how He led me to homeschooling and how homeschooling has strengthened our family ties in a way that wouldn?t have been possible otherwise.

And now, I can hardly wait to meet this special baby who was brave enough to come into my life and absolutely change everything for the best!

Stockton, California, to file for bankruptcy

STOCKTON, California (Reuters) - Stockton, California, is expected to file for bankruptcy before the end of the week, becoming the largest U.S. city to seek protection from its creditors.

No one in the city of nearly 300,000 is relishing the prospect, though some see no choice.

Stockton, which boomed a decade ago with workers from the San Francisco Bay area seeking affordable housing, is the most recent casualty of the housing bust of the past few years.

After failing to strike a deal with city employee unions and other creditors, Stockton's city council passed a budget after a five-hour meeting on Tuesday night. The budget calls for an end to retiree healthcare benefits a year after the city files for bankruptcy, which is expected by Friday afternoon.

Stockton busted spectacularly, and it still is swimming in foreclosures. It has been cutting city jobs for years. The cost of pensions and healthcare have overwhelmed it.

The plan for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, which includes dropping healthcare for retirees who are now fully covered, will close a $26 million deficit in Stockton's budget for its fiscal year that begins on July 1.

Former city workers, often too young to retire under stricter federal guidelines, face poor employment prospects.

Since October 2007, the last time unemployment was under 10 percent in Stockton, the city's population of job seekers has swelled by 10,000 and the number of people who are employed has decreased. Unemployment was estimated at 17.5 percent in May.

"I'm pretty much out of luck," said Patricia Hernandez, 57, who retired two years ago from her job with the city library. A cancer survivor, she is worried the disease might return.

Her diabetic husband gets dialysis worth $22,000 a month, which she does not expect to be able to afford after Stockton cuts medical coverage in a year.

Hernandez retired young, but not in luxury, and takes in about $1,700 per month. She is five years too young for early retirement in the federal Social Security program.

Stockton, like many California city and state governments, lets employees retire as early as 50 or 55. While some public pensions in the state are more than $100,000 per year, the statewide monthly average for the California Public Employees' Retirement System (Calpers), which administers Stockton's plan, is $2,332. The average Calpers retirement age is 60.

Stockton never set aside funds for retirees' healthcare, so it has had no cushion as their medical costs soared. Stockton officials say the city faces a liability for its retiree medical program of $417 million.

Former Stockton City Manager Dwane Milnes, 66, who represented retirees in talks with the city, estimates that a majority of retired Stockton employees will not be able to pay for healthcare.

Geri Ridge, a single 56-year-old former records assistant for Stockton's police department, has told her daughter to sign up for MediCal, the state's health plan for the indigent. Ridge had counted on having healthcare coverage when she calculated that she could retire early on a pension, which is $1,895 per month.

"I expected the city to take care of me," said Ridge, who left the city's payrolls after a heart attack and will now drop her coverage.

While Stockton will cut retiree healthcare coverage, it does not plan to alter pension plans for fear of a battle with Calpers. Some taxpayers consider benefits for city employees a sweet deal.

"I was amazed by the level of benefits we received," said former city planner Denise Jefferson. "It was ridiculous."

She now works for a business improvement district and sees bankruptcy as being necessary for Stockton. "I'm thinking 'Welcome to the real world,'" she said.

"For people who say, 'You can't do this,' I say show us the pot of money," she said. "There's no money."

Standard & Poor's Ratings Services downgraded Stockton to default from selective default on Wednesday, citing the city's move toward bankruptcy and expectations that it will not substantially pay all of its obligations as they come due.

Moody's Investors Service on Wednesday cut to 'Caa3' various general fund-supported debts of the city, putting the ratings in the "substantial risk" category, one notch above the "may be in default, extremely speculative" grouping.

Moody's said its move was based on Stockton's bankruptcy budget. It suspends $10.2 million in debt payments along with cutting employee compensation and retiree benefits by $11.2 million. About $7 million in savings would come from cutting retiree medical benefits for one year and then phasing them out.

Stockton has already defaulted on about $2 million in debt since February, allowing the trustee for one of its bond insurers to seize a building once slated to be its future city hall and three parking garages.

In a major change in the next year?s budget, the government yesterday withdrew the proposed 2 percent tax deduction at source on post-paid and pre-paid mobile phone bills.

It also increased the tax-free income limit of an individual taxpayer to Tk 2 lakh from Tk 1.80 lakh.

However, Finance Minister AMA Muhith kept the minimum individual tax at Tk 3,000 that was Tk 2,000 in the outgoing fiscal year, considering the rise in growth and per capita income.

The ?Finance Bill 2012? was passed in the House yesterday with some major changes.

The tax-free income limit for female taxpayers over 65 years of age has been revised to Tk 2.25 lakh from proposed Tk 2 lakh, while the limit for physically challenged individuals was increased to Tk 2.75 lakh from Tk 2.50 lakh.

The changes came after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her concluding speech on the budget asked the finance minister to consider making revisions to the proposed budget.

?How can we talk if tax is imposed on conversation over mobile phones?? said Hasina referring to the finance minister?s proposal to impose tax on mobile bills.

The government also revised tax at source on export receipts downward to 0.8 percent in the face of opposition from the business community. The tax was increased to 1.2 percent from 0.6 percent in the proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

The finance minister had also proposed increasing tax at source on bank interests to 15 percent for those without tax identification number (TIN) from current 10 percent, a uniform rate for all account holders with or without TIN.

Muhith retained the proposal, but gave some relief to small savers following worries that tax hike on interest incomes of bank-account holders without TIN will hurt small savers.

Now a bank account holder will not need any TIN if he or she has Tk 100,000 in his or her account and the account is a savings account.

The minister withdrew the proposed 10 percent tax at source for premiums in case of life insurance.

The minister imposed 100 percent supplementary duties on imported cars ranging between 1,501cc and 1,750cc, and 150 percent duties on imported cars between 1,751cc and 2,000cc.

The minister retained the package value added tax system for shop-owners with an annual turnover below Tk 70 lakh. The VAT rates, however, have been raised by 50 percent.

Shop-owners in Dhaka and Chittagong city corporations will have to pay Tk 9,000 as VAT, which is now Tk 6,000.

VAT for shop-owners will be Tk 7,200 against existing Tk 4,800 in other city corporations, Tk 5,400 against present Tk 3,600 in district and municipalities, and Tk 2,700 instead of Tk 1,800 in other parts of the country.

Businesses with annual turnover of less than Tk 40 lakh will remain out of the VAT net, said Muhith.

International Business Transactions

Conducting
business in the modern global economy offers great rewards, but involves

Jurisdiction and Venue

In
addition to selecting the choice of law for the international business
transaction contract, the parties can select a jurisdiction to decide
any disputes related to the international business transaction contract.
International business transaction contracts make such provisions
crucial because of issues related to jurisdiction over the parties and
the transaction, enforcement of judgments, legal processes, and travel
and litigation expenses.

Force Majeure

"Force majeure"
clauses allow for a party to be excused from its international business
transaction contractual obligations without punishment if certain
unexpected events occur, such as natural disasters. Domestic contracts
in the United States generally do not

address events such as
terrorism, piracy, financial market collapse, war and so on. However, in
international business transactions, these are often very real
concerns.

Shipping Terms

Where the international
business transaction agreement relates to the shipment of goods, the
shipping terms will determine each party?s respective responsibilities
for elements of the shipping process. Instead of spelling out a number
of elements related to the delivery of the goods, parties often use
shipping terms ? a short hand for allocating responsibilities between
the parties with respect to such matters as transfer of risk of loss,
arrangement of carrier, payment of freight charges, cargo insurance and
so on.

Under U.S. law, these shipping terms are defined
under state law in accordance with the UCC. Common domestic shipping
terms include FOB (Free On Board) and CIF (Cost, Insurance &
Freight). However, international business transaction contracts do not
necessarily use the same terms. Instead, many international agreements
incorporate a separate set of shipping terms called Incoterms
(International Commercial Terms), which are promulgated by the
International Chamber of Commerce, or ICC.

Payment

Making
or receiving payment is also a bit more involved in international
transactions. Because of governmental currency controls and fluctuations
in exchange rates, a key consideration is the currency in which payment
is to be made. Additionally, the method of payment merits special
attention in international business transactions. Payment by check is
often not an option; instead, parties to international business
transactions often elect to use wire transfers or letters of credit. If a
letter of credit is used, the parties must comply with strict
documentary requirements if they expect to receive payment.

Translations

When
dealing with international parties whose principal language is not
English, the parties will often prepare and execute a translated version
of the international business transaction contract. Because of subtle
differences in translation, it is important for the parties to elect
which version of the document will control if a dispute arises.

Compliance With U.S. Laws

Finally,
exports and imports ? as well as currency transfers ? are subject to
numerous U.S. laws. In some situations, U.S. companies can be held
liable for violations of these laws by foreign customers, agents or

Germany famously austere and harsh Finance Minister Wolfgang Sch?uble is the subject of a Der Spiegel interview in which he defends the Euro and Germany's motives in acting the way it has.

SPIEGEL:You want nothing less than a United States of Europe.

Sch?uble: Even though the term is used repeatedly, it doesn't make it any better. No, the Europe of the future will not be a federal state based on the model of the United States of America or the Federal Republic of Germany. It will have its own structure. It's an extremely exciting venture.

Exciting!

But there is one nugget in there that everyone must by now understand, and that is the conditions that must exist for Germany to support the kind of fiscal burden sharing that will be required to end the euro crisis.

SPIEGEL: What would a fiscal union have to look like so that Germany could accept euro bonds?

Sch?uble: In an optimal scenario, there would be a European finance minister, who would have a veto against national budgets and would have to approve levels of new borrowing. It would be up the individual countries to decide how to spend the approved funds, that is, how to answer the question: "Should we spend more money on families or on road construction?"

This is the clearest articulation yet of the German stance. If you want German money, then a European finance minister must be allowed to veto your spending. Don't like it? Then figure out a way to backstop yourself?

Could Europe ever get to this point?

Well the fact of the matter is that it's not that different from what George Soros is proposing... an idea that got a lot of buzz today.

Soros proposing not a finance minister that can veto budgets, but rather a debt redemption fund that backstops government finances and penalizes those countries that aren't undertaking agreed-upon reform.

The different is not that enormous as both essentially involve a backstop for some lack of sovereignty. Soros' vision is a bit less harsh, though even he envisions a full joint Eurobond scheme eventually.

Meanwhile, the FT is reporting that at this week's summit a scheme is being devised that moves the ball along these lines... a plan whereby the EU could rewrite national budgets. The draft report will also be presented as part of a fiscal and political union.

Bottom line: The various ideas aren't wildly far apart, and some discussion in this direction is happening.

The signal we're looking for next is not from the Germans, but from the leadership of Spain/Italy/France that this kind of trade appeals to them, that they'd be willing to give up more fiscal sovereignty in exchange for backstops.

One more thing: It's true that any scheme like this would be a long way off, and it feels as though the speed would be too slow to prevent an acute crisis. But if the market starts to expect that debts will be backstopped, that will help. Combine that with the ECB doing whatever it takes to keep the banking system alive (such as this week's latest move to expand eligible collateral) and a medium-term muddle along path exists.

Rays Sweep Phillies In Doubleheader: Cliff Lee Remains Winless

PHILADELPHIA -- Cliff Lee isn't going to win many games when he lets a guy batting .093 drive in four runs.

Brooks Conrad ripped a pair of two-run doubles off the winless Lee, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 Sunday night to complete a day-night doubleheader sweep.

"I definitely made some mistakes, and they made me pay for it," Lee said.

Conrad was released by the Brewers after going 3 for 40. The infielder was claimed by the Rays on Thursday and went 3 for 6 with five RBIs in the first weekend with his new team. Conrad's two-out RBI single in the ninth on Saturday cost Jonathan Papelbon his first blown save.

"He's a very aggressive sort," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He's also very eager to play, our type of guy."

Lee (0-4) allowed five runs and six hits in seven innings. The 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner hasn't won a game since last Sept. 26, or 273 days ago. Lee is making $21.5 million this year, most on the Phillies.

"He had a streak when he looked super," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We know he could do better."

In the opener, Carlos Pena hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Rays held on for a 3-2 victory. David Price became the first AL pitcher to reach 10 wins.

Cole Hamels pitched three-hit ball for seven shutout innings in his first appearance against the Rays since he was the MVP of the 2008 World Series for Philadelphia. But the lefty departed after throwing 111 pitches, and Pena connected off Antonio Bastardo (2-2).

Because of Friday's rainout, the Rays went with a "bullpen" game. Cesar Ramos tossed 2 2-3 hitless innings in his third career start and first since 2009. Wade Davis allowed three runs and three hits in 2 2-3 innings in relief of Ramos. Brandon Gomes (2-2) earned the win with 2 2-3 scoreless innings.

The five-time defending NL East champion Phillies are 6-15 in June. They fell back into last place, a game behind Miami.

The depleted Phillies should be getting some help soon. Chase Utley is scheduled to play for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, and the five-time All-Star second baseman could make his season debut this week. Utley has been sidelined because he has chronic knee problems.

Former NL MVP Ryan Howard is still rehabbing in extended spring training after having surgery to repair a torn Achilles' tendon last year. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay hasn't pitched since May 27 because of a lat injury.

"This year has been tough for us," Manuel said. "Injuries have accumulated. We're trying to get by until we get healthy. It's going to be tough."

Lee hasn't received much run support this season. He couldn't even get a win when he threw 10 scoreless innings at San Francisco on April 18. But he has also blown three three-run leads. In his last seven starts, Lee has a 5.10 ERA.

Sean Rodriguez hit an RBI double off Lee to put the Rays up 1-0 in the second. Conrad followed by hitting a 3-0 pitch down the left-field line to score two and make it 3-0.

Like most observers, Lee was surprised Conrad had a green light to swing away.

"Yeah, I was surprised to be honest with you but I shouldn't be getting to 3-0," he said.

Placido Polanco hit an RBI double, and John Mayberry Jr. followed with a run-scoring single to get the Phillies within 3-2 in the fourth.

Lee retired the first two batters in the sixth before Ben Zobrist singled and Rodriguez walked. Conrad then hit a double off the top of the fence in right-center to give the Rays a 5-2 lead.

Rodriguez knocked over catcher Brian Schneider on a play at home. Schneider left the game with a right ankle sprain.

Polanco's RBI double in the sixth cut it to 5-3. But the Phillies couldn't score him from third with no outs.

The Rays got two insurance runs in the eighth when B.J. Rosenberg walked four batters. Jake Diekman came in and walked in a run.

Price (10-4) went seven innings in Game 1 and gave up four hits, including Jimmy Rollins' homer in the sixth.

Manuel became testy with the media when questioned about lifting Hamels for Bastardo, as well as explaining his late-game pinch-hitting decisions.

"That's our eighth-inning guy," Manuel said of Bastardo. "I think right now, what you see is the pitchers that we have. That's the ones that we have in our minor leagues and up here. That's what it is."

"You guys ought to sit in the dugout with me and give me all the scenarios," Manuel added. "I don't think we know them. I mean, we don't know how to manage the game. Like really, I think you should sit down there with us or tweet us (strategy) or something."

Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth for his 21st save in 22 chances. Rollins reached second base with two outs after a single and stolen base, but Rodney struck out Hunter Pence swinging to end the game.

Hamels was 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts against Tampa Bay in 2008 when the Phillies won their title. He pitched even better on Sunday.

Bastardo walked two of the first three batters he faced. Pena hit the first pitch over the fence in right field.

2013 NBA Championship Odds: Heat Favorites to Repeat, Pacers with Respect in East

The current state of sports truly is immediate and fleeting. It hasn't been 48 hours since LeBron James won his first NBA Championship with the Miami Heat, but already, it's time to look forward to 2012-13. The fast paced world of instant reaction makes time spent carrying about a championship team that isn't yours (or frankly, a team that you don't like) over in a heartbeat. So it's fair that the folks at Bovada.lv would waste no time with their early odds for the 2012-13 NBA season.

With little turnover expected from the World Champions, the Heat are favorites to repeat, with 11/4 odds. The Oklahoma City Thunder unsurprisingly come in at second at 5/1. Look deep in the NBA landscape (with how it's currently constructed) and neither conference looks prepared to handle the Heat or the Thunder in preventing an NBA Finals rematch. Even still, with all of the injury concerns regarding Derrick Rose, the Chicago Bulls still sit at third with 6/1 odds. Getting Rose back in game form in time for the playoffs next season could turn the Eastern Conference postseason on its head from what it could look like in the regular season.

The Indiana Pacers would prefer to be the noisemakers next postseason, and even as currently constituted and no rush to add additional pieces, are eighth in the league, third in the East, at 20/1. Indiana tops Boston (25/1), Orlando (30/1) and New York (35/1) for some of the highest expectations in the Eastern Conference as far as title contenders go. Out West, meanwhile, the Lakers and Spurs (10/1), as well as the Mavericks (14/1) and Clippers (18/1) are expected to be the top challengers in the West, sporting better odds than the Pacers.

Is it fair to say teams like the Lakers, Mavs, and Clippers are closer to a title than Indiana? They each have the superstar front covered, but none of them have a roster as stable to compete as the Pacers. How much of the Lakers' odds are banked on them swinging a deal for Dwight Howard or the Mavs' odds for the same opportunity, plus or minus Deron Williams? Without those kinds of headline creating moves, neither team seems in a much better position than they were this year when the Thunder made quick work of them.

Of course, with the 2012-13 regular season only four months away, put whatever you want from the past two days behind you and look forward to the Pacers as a contender in the Eastern Conference once again.
