The legislators backing Sullivan in the release are:
Rep. Eric Bedingfield - Greenville Co.?????????
Rep. Bill Chumley - Greenville & Spartanburg Co.??
Rep. Tommy Stringer - Greenville Co.??????????
Sen. Lee Bright - Greenville & ?Spartanburg Co.
Sen. Kevin Bryant - Anderson Co.
Sen. Danny Verdin - Greenville & ?Laurens Co.
?
?
Leaders say Sullivan?s record of fighting for
conservative Republican agenda makes him the best choice.?
A group of six Upstate Legislators announced today their endorsement of Chris Sullivan as the best choice in the special election for State House District 17.
The six Legislators, all Republicans, include three members of the Senate?s William Wallace Caucus and all of whom are acknowledged for their leadership on conservative issues. The group includes Representatives Eric Bedingfield, Tommy Stringer, and Bill Chumley; and Senators Danny Verdin, Kevin Bryant, and Lee Bright. All are members of the Greenville Legislative Delegation with the exception of Sen. Bryant who represents Anderson.
The group jointly issued the following statement:
We are honored to endorse Chris Sullivan for SC House District 17.
As reform-minded conservative legislators, we understand that we face perilous times in our state and in our country. Now, more than ever, we must have legislators in Columbia who not only understand the issues but have the skill to guide legislation into law, starting on their first day in office. Chris has the skills to quickly bring intelligent conservative reform to Columbia.
A candidate who merely states that he is pro-gun, pro-life or fiscally responsible without offering concrete proof is not sufficient. Voters deserve more than unsubstantiated promises.
Chris has promoted conservative reforms over many years, we know that he can deliver what he has promised.
We know that Chris will defend the unborn because he has actively Pro-life legislation for years. He has given us strategic advice as we advanced the pro-life agenda.
His consistent support of life has earned him endorsements from highly-regarded pro-life activists such as Dr. Oran Smith from Palmetto Family Council and Lenna Neill who directs the Piedmont Women?s Center, a crisis pregnancy counseling center in Taylors. His commitment to this issue has earned him a ?100%? rating from the South Carolina Citizens for Life.
We know that Chris will defend our 2nd Amendment rights because he understands the complex strategy that liberals will use to try to take our guns. He rejects the notion that the 2nd Amendment only protects hunters. Chris believes, as Thomas Jefferson did, that guns are necessary to protect ourselves from tyranny.
We know that Chris will defend our 10th Amendment rights ? not just against Obamacare but against the increases in Federal funding that has slowly taken away South Carolina?s independence. He understands that the amount of Federal funds flowing through state agencies is greater than South Carolina?s entire General Fund. He realizes that a third of these Federal funds is borrowed and contributes to our escalating national debt. He will work to reduce and end our dependence upon these funds.
We know that Chris will defend the needs of small business, because he has worked in small businesses his entire career. For many years he worked in his family?s retail jewelry store in Greenville before forming his own public relations and consulting business. He understands that small business remains our best hope to create jobs and move our economy forward.
South Carolina desperately needs reform in our tax structure, in our government and in our educational system. Chris understands that an effective legislator must be able to address all of these issues. We are confident that he can.
That?s why we strongly endorse Chris Sullivan for SC House district 17
Having run a positive issues-oriented campaign, we also know that he has earned the endorsement of fellow candidate Roy Harmon.
We know that Chris has outwardly demonstrated his inward Christian integrity through his involvement with Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Brushy Creek Baptist Church and the the travelers Rest Camp of Gideons International.
We are taught that a man is known by the company that he keeps. Chris believes the same conservative principles that we believe. For these reasons, we stand with Chris Sullivan for SC House district 17 as we are all committed to protecting and improving South Carolina.

With the tires of a monster truck and guts that pound the ground like a dinosaur, the T-Rex is not just the ultimate Tonka toy.
The truck simulates an earthquake, revealing the properties of rocks and sediments below to watching researchers, and therefore shedding light on how the ground shakes during a temblor.
The U.S. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation is sending T-Rex to New Zealand's South Island, to shake the soils around Christchurch, where a series of earthquakes in 2011 destroyed buildings and took lives.
The earthquakes caused widespread liquefaction, a phenomenon in which shaking of water-logged soils turns the sediment temporarily from a solid to a liquid. The jiggly, wet soils undermined buildings and other structures. As many as 7,500 homes were abandoned. Parts of downtown Christchurch remain cordoned off due to the extensive damage.
The seismic data gathered with T-Rex will inform engineers, on an area-by-area basis, how to rebuild structures in Christchurch to resist future earthquakes, according to a statement from the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation.?The seismic waves can find which soils are more likely to liquefy, and which soils are more stable. Engineers can design structures to withstand earthquakes, but first they need to know more about the soils in each area, the statement said.
"Designing a quake-resistant building starts with the soil," Brady Cox, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, said in the statement. "The stiffness and layering of the soil has a profound effect on the strength of shaking felt during an earthquake."
The 64,000-pound (29,000 kilogram) shaker truck will sail overseas on Feb. 3, arriving in Christchurch in March.

When starting your own company it?s not enough to have a great new product or service. It?s not enough to have ample financing. What you also need is sound business sense, the ?5 M?s? of self-employment. What are the 5 M?s?
Marketing your services
Don?t put all your eggs in one basket. Develop a diverse client base in terms of industries you sell to and the size of client organizations you target. For example, during the 1980s the bottom dropped out of the oil business for several years. As a result many chemical companies and consultancies, large and small, saw their sales to oilfield service companies decline substantially. Having a diverse client base would have helped lessen the impact of this sort of situation. Having contingency plans to implement would allow you to quickly compensate for the loss of major customers.
I derive much of my income from my freelance technical writing. During the recent recession I saw my income from sales to both companies and magazines drop substantially. To compensate for this I expanded my sales to government agencies and the nonprofit sector. Luckily I did not have to start from ground zero since I already had some sales to these sectors before the economic slump hit in 2008. I also monitored my sales closely and was able to take timely action to expand my client base because I saw my sales to certain sectors begin to decline in the fourth quarter of 2007.
During the 1980s when my technical writing sales to the oil industry slumped, I was able to compensate by recruiting new clients in Europe and marketing to pharmaceutical industry trade publications. However, because most European countries have been harder hit by the recent recession than the U.S., these strategies did not work for me this time around. Instead I increased my marketing to units of the federal government.
Managing money issues
When you are selling services, it is often difficult to decide what to charge. There are several strategies you can adopt. First, you can learn what your competitors are charging for the same or very similar services and adopt a similar price structure. Alternatively you could take the approach of offering a premium service and charging a higher price. This is the approach I usually take and it often works even in competitive bidding situations if you clearly explain what you are selling and why your service is more cost effective at a higher price than competitors. For example, I occasionally charge 25% to 33% more than my competitors in competitive bidding processes and still win the work. Of course, this approach means that I must provide the added value that I promise.
Sometimes it is difficult to obtain a fair price for your service. For instance, in 2011 a major oil company saw freelance writing projects being offered at $25 per hour on Craig?s List. Neglecting the greater difficulty of technical writing, they offered technical writing projects at this fee. I and some other technical writers turned down the work when it was offered at this low hourly rate because it was substantially lower than the going rate for this kind of writing. The oil firm hired people with limited or no technical backgrounds to work on the projects. They got unsatisfactory documents (chapters in a training manual for example) as a result. I don?t know how this situation was eventually resolved. However, I do know they approached another technical writer and me to whom they offered the original low fees to edit and improve these poorly written documents.
The sharp drop in income during the recent recession led some experienced consultants and technical writers desperate for work to reduce their fees. However, now that the U.S. economy is growing again, albeit slowly, these chemists are finding many of their clients are refusing to pay their pre-recession fee levels. Thus they face the unpleasant choice of losing clients or working for lower fees.
Meeting clients? specifications
When designing projects for clients, it is essential to agree upon the specifications of the project, project budget, the timetable for completion of various parts of the project, schedule of payments and reporting requirements. Having project management skills is often essential in managing projects to the satisfaction of the client as well as yourself.
It is worth spending time up front clearly defining the client?s specifications and agreeing on how you will meet them. These are the biggest factors in determining whether the client will be satisfied with your work and willing to assign you additional projects.
Minimizing scope creep
Scope creep results when new features are added to a project?s scope after work has started. Scope creep is usually caused by inadequate planning at the beginning of the project. Often each change request is small and the entrepreneur accepts them to keep the client happy. However, a point often is reached when the changes become numerous enough that the project requires much more work than originally agreed upon. The additional work can delay project completion and cause the project to go over budget.
Meeting deadlines
To achieve commercial success it is often essential to complete the project on schedule. To help assure this, project managers often adopt project milestones and dates for their completion. Milestones are intermediate goals that clearly indicate progress in achieving final project goals and completing the project. They are also useful in monitoring project spending relative to achieving project goals.
Following these 5Ms helps increase the overall success of your business while increasing customer satisfaction and increasing the chances of obtaining repeat business.

Jan. 27, 2013 ? Scientists at ASU are celebrating their recent success on the path to understanding what makes the fiber that spiders spin -- weight for weight -- at least five times as strong as piano wire. They have found a way to obtain a wide variety of elastic properties of the silk of several intact spiders' webs using a sophisticated but non-invasive laser light scattering technique.
"Spider silk has a unique combination of mechanical strength and elasticity that make it one of the toughest materials we know," said Professor Jeffery Yarger of ASU's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and lead researcher of the study. "This work represents the most complete understanding we have of the underlying mechanical properties of spider silks."
Spider silk is an exceptional biological polymer, related to collagen (the stuff of skin and bones) but much more complex in its structure. The ASU team of chemists is studying its molecular structure in an effort to produce materials ranging from bulletproof vests to artificial tendons.
The extensive array of elastic and mechanical properties of spider silks in situ, obtained by the ASU team, is the first of its kind and will greatly facilitate future modeling efforts aimed at understanding the interplay of the mechanical properties and the molecular structure of silk used to produce spider webs.
The team published their results in a recent issue of Nature materials and their paper is titled "Non-invasive determination of the complete elastic moduli of spider silks."
"This information should help provide a blueprint for structural engineering of an abundant array of bio-inspired materials, such as precise materials engineering of synthetic fibers to create stronger, stretchier, and more elastic materials," explained Yarger.
Other members of Yarger's team, in ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, included Kristie Koski, at the time a postdoctoral researcher and currently a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, and ASU undergraduate students Paul Akhenblit and Keri McKiernan.
The Brillouin light scattering technique used an extremely low power laser, less than 3.5 milliwatts, which is significantly less than the average laser pointer. Recording what happened to this laser beam as it passed through the intact spider webs enabled the researchers to spatially map the elastic stiffnesses of each web without deforming or disrupting it. This non-invasive, non-contact measurement produced findings showing variations among discrete fibers, junctions and glue spots.
Four different types of spider's webs were studied. They included Nephila clavipes (pictured), A. aurantia ("gilded silver face"-common to the contiguous United States), L. Hesperus the western black widow and P. viridans the green lynx spider, the only spider included that does not build a web for catching prey but has major silk elastic properties similar to those of the other species studied.
The group also investigated one of the most studied aspects of orb-weaving dragline spider silk, namely supercontraction, a property unique to silk. Spider silk takes up water when exposed to high humidity. Absorbed water leads to shrinkage in an unrestrained fiber up to 50 percent shrinkage with 100 percent humidity in N. clavipes silk.
Their results are consistent with the hypothesis that supercontraction helps the spider tailor the properties of the silk during spinning. This type of behavior, specifically adjusting mechanical properties by simply adjusting water content, is inspirational from a bio-inspired mechanical structure perspective.
"This study is unique in that we can extract all the elastic properties of spider silk that cannot and have not been measured with conventional testing," concluded Yarger.

WASHINGTON???The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide. The FBI is investigating.
The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch (http://www.ussc.gov), was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."
The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.
Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online, and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.
The FBI's Richard McFeely, executive assistant director of the agency's?Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, said in a statement that "we were aware as soon as it happened and are handling it as a criminal investigation. We are always concerned when someone illegally accesses another person's or government agency's network."
Hours after the hijacking, pages on the USSC.gov website were available only sporadically.

PARIS (AP) ? The French government is redefining hashtag with a Gallic touch. The country that has an academy devoted solely to the use of the French language has given its official seal of approval to a new word for the Twittersphere: mot-diese.
Pronounced 'Mo-Dee-YEZ', it doesn't exactly trip off the tongue. But that's not the point. French law requires that government agencies use French terms ? and teachers are required to spread the word. New words are approved by the Academie Francaise and written into the lawbooks.
The French word for hashtag, published in the official journal on Wednesday, follows the government's somewhat successful redefinition of email ? courriel ? and its less successful attempt to persuade people to avoid the word "weekend."

Jan. 25, 2013 ? A new study from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) shows that tissues derived from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells in an experimental model were not rejected when transplanted back into genetically identical recipients. The study, published online in Cell Stem Cell, demonstrates the potential of utilizing iPS cells to develop cell types that could offer treatment for a wide range of conditions, including diabetes, liver and lung diseases, without the barrier of immune rejection.
Ashleigh Boyd, DPhil, and Neil Rodrigues, DPhil, the study's senior authors, are assistant professors of dermatology at BUSM and researchers at the Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM) at Boston University and Boston Medical Center (BMC). They also are lead investigators at the National Institutes of Health's Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) at Roger Williams Medical Center, a clinical and research affiliate of BUSM.
iPS cells can be developed from adult cell types, such as skin or blood, by returning them to a stem cell state using genetic manipulation. iPS cells are capable of maturing (differentiating) into all the specific cell types in the body, making them a powerful tool for biological research and a source of tissues for transplantation based therapies. Given that iPS cells can be made in a patient-specific manner, there should be great potential for them to be transplanted back into the same patient without rejection. Yet a study published in Nature in 2011 demonstrated that iPS cells transplanted in the stem cell state were rejected in genetically identical recipients.
"The Nature study provocatively suggested that tissues derived from patient-specific iPS cells may be immunogenic after transplantation. However, it never directly assessed the immunogenicity of the therapeutically relevant cell types that could be utilized in regenerative medicine and transplantation," said Rodrigues.
The BUSM researchers evaluated this matter by taking adult cells from an experimental model and deriving iPS cells from them. They then differentiated the iPS cells into three cell types: neuronal (nerve); hepatocytes (liver); and endothelial (blood vessel lining) cells. These three cell types represent each of the three germ layers present during embryonic development -- mesoderm, ectoderm and endoderm. Cells from these layers differentiate and ultimately develop into the body's tissue and organ systems. Using experiments to mirror the potential clinical use of patient-specific iPS cells in cell therapy, the team transplanted each of the differentiated cells into a genetically identical experimental model and found no signs of an elevated immune response or indications of rejection.
The study results suggest that using patient-specific iPS cells should overcome issues of immune rejection in transplantation, which will be a significant problem for potential embryonic stem cell-derived therapies. Immune rejection in transplantation is treated clinically by immunosuppressive drugs but they can have serious side-effects, including the risk of developing cancer.
"If the use of immunosuppressive drugs can be avoided, as may be the case for patient-specific iPS cell based therapies, it would be preferable. Our results are very promising and future work should be directed at assessing whether tissues derived from human iPS cells will similarly lack immunogenicity," said Boyd.

TIP! You can spruce up the interior of your home by cleaning your carpets on a regular basis. High traffic areas of your carpet need special attention to remain clean.
Home improvement is essential to keeping up your home, but you need to understand it and what to buy for it. Regulations, needed tools and design aspects can be intimidating. The tips below will help you to properly and safely renovate your residence.
TIP! Warn your neighbors in advance if you will need to use part of the street for your home improvement. Often, major renovation jobs will require trucks, heavy equipment or a dumpster, so you need to prepare for them.
Make sure your budget includes everything that is necessary. Unexpected expenses quickly start adding up, and your mistakes can cost you by throwing your budget off track. You can stop this from happening by doing a lot of planning. This will help you stay flexible if something goes wrong, such as a key material not being in stock.
TIP! Ensure that there are no low-lying areas, and make sure doubly sure there are none near your home?s foundation. Fill any low areas with compacted soil, as this will prevent any water from collecting and causing erosion in the garden.
Even novices can repair leaky faucets. You will save money ? and your water reserves ? if you take the time to fix the problem quickly. This can keep you within even a tight budget.
TIP! If you are doing multiple projects in one room, consider the order of the projects. If you?re doing both flooring and cabinets, do the cabinets first.
Quotes and feedback from contractors should be viewed with a degree of skepticism. Sometimes, a contractor will use an intimidated or disinterested customer to their advantage. Issues and problems raise by contractors must be verified prior to the homeowner approving spending extra money or when extending the construction timeline.
TIP! When improving you home, don?t forget the outside and the yard. Having a mowed lawn, whose edges have been trimmed, improves the exterior appearance of your home.
Consider installing a shower in at least one bathroom if you don?t already have one. You can lower your water usage by putting in a shower. Also, showers are more accessible. Drawing a full bath can use more than four times as much water as taking a quick shower.
TIP! If you plan on doing home improvements in the areas of you house that house heavy plumbing, like bathrooms and kitchens, install water-resistant walls to replace the ordinary ones. Green board resists the growth of mold and mildew, and is better suited to withstand dampness.
Before planning a new project, consider its return. Projects that will show a great return are the wisest to do. It is known that all projects are not equal in cost and effort. Contact a realtor for some good advice on what is the most desirable home improvement project.
TIP! Insulation is something worth investing in. Use weather-stripping on all windows and doors.
Home improvement projects are essential to homeowners, and it is important to understand what each job consists of. This article makes understanding what you need easier. Follow the tips above to get started.

The fiscal 2013 Q3 numbers from Logitech are in, and according to new CEO Bracken P Darrell, the "disappointing" results will require immediate action to turn around -- action that includes selling off its remote control (read: Harmony) and digital video security divisions. Logitech notched an operating loss of $180 million, on sales of $615 million. At this time last year, we were still looking forward to a refresh of the line which resulted in the Harmony Touch, but that does not appear to have turned things around. Harmony remote sales fell off by 55 percent based on units, although a focus on higher end devices like the new Touch meant revenue declined only 24 percent.
According to a slide in the presentation, after a strategic review, Logitech is focusing on tablet accessories, wireless speakers as well as keeping its lead in PC-related products. Other "non-strategic" products are also on the chopping block, and we'd have to think that includes video conferencing after yesterday's announcement. Current owners worried about potential support should be taken care of however, as a post by Darrell on the support forums indicates company will continue to provide support during the sale process and all current warranties are still in effect. There's no word about a possible buyer, but we'll be tuning into the earnings call tomorrow morning to see what additional information is revealed.

BOSTON (Reuters) - The four primary owners of the pharmacy linked to a deadly U.S. meningitis outbreak that has killed 44 people received at least $16 million in salaries and shareholder distributions in 2012, according to papers filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
New England Compounding Center owner Carla Conigliaro, the largest shareholder in the privately held company, received nearly $9 million in 2012, according to court papers filed late on Friday.
NECC also paid about $18,000 on her American Express card for purchases from gas stations, restaurants, the Apple Store and other places.
Barry Cadden, NECC's chief pharmacist, received about $3.2 million in 2012, filings show. His wife, Lisa Cadden, received about $2.8 million. Greg Conigliaro, a recycling entrepreneur who is Lisa Cadden's brother, received about $1.6 million.
The filings also showed that Framingham, Massachusetts-based NECC had made lease payments for a 2012 BMW X5 and 2011 Mercedes Benz GL-550. NECC paid, for example, $1,251 a month for Carla Conigliaro's Mercedes Benz lease payment, court papers show.
Brown Rudnick LLP, which is representing the official committee of unsecured creditors in NECC's bankruptcy, said NECC had paid more than $21 million to the pharmacy's four primary owners and other insiders.
Medical Sales Management, which shares some common ownership with NECC, received more than $4 million from NECC in 2012, court papers show.
A spokesman for NECC did not return a telephone call seeking comment.
NECC filed for bankruptcy protection last month after U.S. authorities shut down its pharmacy operations amid a meningitis outbreak that has killed 44 people and sickened 678 others, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
NECC shipped thousands of vials of a fungus-tainted steroid to medical facilities throughout the United States, according to authorities.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Monday he will confront climate change in his second term in office, an unexpected vow that puts the politically charged issue among his domestic priorities alongside gun control and immigration reform.
Linking climate change to devastating weather and fires, Obama said the country could grow its economy while protecting itself from the worst effects of a phenomenon scientists say is getting worse due to man-made pollutants.
"We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations," the president said, dedicating more than a minute of his roughly 20-minute address to the issue.
By pointing to the topic in detail in his second Inaugural Address, the Democratic president committed the White House to try to mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases - an area where he had uneven success during his first four years in office.
While Obama won a commitment from the auto industry to increase fuel efficiency standards in coming years, a more comprehensive plan to put a price on greenhouse gases fell flat in Congress.
Climate change was a mostly dormant issue during last year's presidential campaign, and environmentalists hoped that Obama would put the topic squarely on his agenda in a second term.
Obama said in his address that the United States should be a leader in sustainable energy and framed the issue as a matter of national security and economic opportunity.
"We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries - we must claim its promise," he said.
Scientists say emissions from cars and coal-fed power plants are among the sources of carbon dioxide warming the planet.
Last year was the hottest on record in the United States, scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said this month.
Scientists caution that no single weather event can be blamed on climate change, but the force of Hurricane Sandy, which devastated parts of New York and New Jersey in October, and a withering drought in the Midwest, are seen as harbingers.
"Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires, and crippling drought, and more powerful storms," Obama said.
Climate change activists, who say the phenomenon is worsening and will increasingly affect human health and budgets, said they were heartened by the president's words.
"My hope is renewed," Larry Schweiger, president of the National Wildlife Federation, said in a statement. "Confronting climate change is not a cause of a president or a party but an imperative for the American people."
Obama might find it impossible to revive the climate bill while his Republican Party rivals control the House of Representatives, but White House officials have said they plan to use executive power to make progress on the issue.
"I'll tell you what my green dream is: that we finally face up to climate change," Vice President Joe Biden said at a National Wildlife Federation inaugural celebration on Sunday night.
In the coming months, the Environmental Protection Agency is expected to outline standards for power plant emissions. If those rules are as strong as environmentalists want, it could go a long way toward curtailing emissions for a source of 40 percent of the country's carbon gas.
