Dodgeball II?
It?s not a remake of the 2004 movie starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller.
The marquee will be up at Ford High School. It is an original production that will be starring middle school students in the Utica Community Schools.
On Saturday, up to 30 teams from the district?s junior high schools will decide the dodgeball championships. Action will get underway at 10 a.m.
There will be champions in three divisions; boys, girls and coed. There will also be a fun division that will include prominent members of the community.
Unlike the movie ?Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,? the money won?t go to save Average Joe?s gym. Rather, it will go to the sports boosters clubs at the junior high schools.
Here?s the format: There will be six players per team with a replacement allowed due to injury. Each match will last between three and five minutes. The match begins when three members of each team race to the center line in an attempt to grab one of the balls. If a person gets hit by a thrown ball, he or she is out. If a person catches a thrown ball, the thrower from the opposing team is out. Throwing at heads is not allowed. The balls used are similar to Nerf balls.
The primary organizers behind the fund-raiser are Mike Benson from the boosters club at Heritage Junior High; Carl Kudla and Wayne Rockensuess.
There will be volunteer officials working the dodgeball matches, and don?t be surprised if Kudla finds himself in that role. He has spent the past three decades working as a high school sports official. His primary sports were baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball.
?This is for the kids. The money will go to the boosters clubs, and they will use it for sports at the junior high level. Sports are a very important part of the overall educational experience,? said Kudla.
