DENVER -- John Fox should win the NFL?s ?Coach of the Year? award. It?s only fair after what he has accomplished in his first year as head coach.

Of course, the reality is that the competition is most likely between Green Bay?s Mike McCarthy (15 ? 1) and New Orleans? Sean Payton (13-3) with consideration also given to the 49ers Jim Harbaugh (13-3) and possibly the Patriots Bill Belichick (13-3).

McCarthy has Aaron Rodgers, Payton has Drew Brees, Belichick has Tom Brady and, although Harbaugh (also in his first year) has Alexis Smith, he is a 7 year veteran who finished the regular season with a higher QB rating than Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Mark Sanchez and Michael Vick.

That is hardly balanced, as Fox has the enigmatic Tim Tebow.

Tebow, he of the running, gunning, rambling, scrambling, ambling and oft time, bumbling school of quarterbacking, gets most of the credit for the Broncos success.

But it is fact, if not deed, that Fox is mainly responsible for the team?s first playoff appearance in 6 years.

He was fair in opening up the quarterback competition during training camp. He gave Kyle Orton a fair chance to prove he deserved the job and it was fair to bench him after going 1-4 as the starter. He was fair to the team when he gave Tebow the call and put in a new playbook that exploited Tebow?s strengths.

No team has accomplished more with less.

He was able to maintain control and keep a balanced demeanor throughout the quarterback controversy and the media hysteria that ensued after each successive win.

This past Sunday, he decidedly out-coached Pittsburgh?s Super Bowl winning coach Mike Tomlin in an AFC wild-card game.

Balloting for the ?Coach of the Year? award is concluded at the end of the regular season. So even if the Broncos went on to win the Super Bowl he probably still wouldn?t get it.

That would not be fair.
