Medicaid Planning With Your Elderly Parent

Medicaid, for many people, is the only long-term health care insurance available. If your elderly parent needs to go to a nursing home, unless he or she has substantial assets, your parent (or you) will most likely have to deal with your state?s Medicaid agency to apply for financial assistance for the nursing home. This article covers the costs of nursing home care, what resources must be utilized by the elderly person to pay those costs, and what may be exempt so that costs don?t completely impoverish your parent or other family members. You want to ensure your elderly parent receives the much-needed care that Medicaid can pay for while at the same time preserving property your parents have spent a lifetime to acquire. You will learn about how to preserve your parent?s property while getting the care your aged parent needs.

Many people will try to keep their parents out of a nursing home for lots of reasons. One of the big reasons is the cost. Nursing home care is expensive. Expect to pay from $35,000.00 to $150.000.00 per year. Actual costs depend on several factors including the level of care provided and location. Typically it costs more in the northeast and in California than other locations. The average length of stay in a nursing home is around 2 ? years or 30 months. The general rule is that before Medicaid will pay, your parent must spend all of his or her money except for the last $2,000.00.

Often times family members hope Medicaid will pay for their parent?s health care costs but do not want Medicaid to take all their parent?s money and property to pay for it. Some family members transfer property out of their parent?s name into the name of another person so that Medicaid will not be able to take the property. Unfortunately Medicaid has a rule that says they can look at any property that your elderly parent owned for the last 5 years and take the property from the new owner to pay for nursing home costs. This is called the ?5 year look-back period.? People do not plan 5 years in advance for a parent?s nursing home stay, so transferring property out of your parent?s name will not work to keep Medicare from taking the property.

In many cases the family home is not something that Medicaid will take if the other spouse continues to live in the family home. In the case of a widow Medicaid still won?t take the family home if the nursing home resident has the subjective intent to return home even if there may be no realistic possibility to return home. Often times all it takes to establish the subjective intent to return home is for your elderly parent to sign an affidavit stating that he or she intends to return home upon regaining good health. This preserves the house while your parent lives in the nursing home, but after your parent?s death Medicaid can take the house to recover costs unless steps have been taken to avoid it.

Often times a simple strategy can be used to keep Medicaid from taking your widowed parent?s home after he or she dies. That strategy is known as a life estate. It is simple to do. In addition to the affidavit of subjective intent to return home, your parent needs to sign a new deed to his or her house. This new deed gives the house to the beneficiary upon your parent?s death while your parent retains ownership of the house during his or her lifetime. After the death of the parent, if the beneficiary acts quickly to complete the transfer of the title of the house from the parent to the beneficiary, Medicaid will usually not take the house. That is because Medicaid usually only intervenes in a probate to take the house, and the technique described above avoids probate.

This strategy avoids the problem of the 5 year look back period because your parent keeps the house during his or her lifetime so no transfer occurred. Then it avoids Medicaid using the house to pay for your parent?s nursing home costs after your parent dies because there is no probate estate for Medicaid to file a claim against.

Since Medicaid is run be each state, the rules vary. This can get complicated very fast. Therefore you should not use this information as legal advice but should seek the advice of a lawyer who has experience in these matters.

To sum up you read about the possibility of your parent needing nursing home care, the costs of that care, and how long your parent may need that care. You also read that care is paid for by your parent and then by Medicaid. Finally you learned how to possibly keep Medicaid from taking the family home to pay for your parent?s care.

This is a very complex area, and many different strategies are available to keep Medicare from taking family property. If you are facing the possibility of nursing home care for a parent and your parent owns a home or other substantial assets, it would be wise to seek the advice of an attorney who handles these matters to preserve family property.

Obama to the nation: Rekindle post-Sept. 11 unity

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is calling on Americans to rekindle the spirit of unity that characterized the response to the Sept. 11 attacks. "It can be a lasting virtue," he said. "Not just on one day, but every day."

The president made his appeal during his weekly radio and Internet address, two weeks before the 10th anniversary of the al-Qaida plot that turned commercial jetliners into deadly weapons in New York, Pennsylvania and northern Virginia.

Obama plans to observe the anniversary on Sept. 11 with stops at ground zero in lower Manhattan, where the World Trade Center towers fell; at Shanksville, Pa., where one of the commandeered planes crashed; and at the Pentagon, which was also hit by a hijacked jetliner.

But he cast his plea for good will against the backdrop of the economic challenges facing the country today. Coming in the aftermath of bitter partisan fights over government spending and tough criticism of his administration by Republican presidential candidates, his remarks were an overt call for greater cooperation.

"Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11," he said.

He recalled the work of volunteers following the attacks, the blood donations and the food and clothing drives.

"We were united, and the outpouring of generosity and compassion reminded us that in times of challenge, we Americans move forward together, as one people," he said.

These days, he said, the country is still fighting al-Qaida, it is ending the war in Iraq, pulling back troops from Afghanistan and "emerging from the worst economic crisis in our lifetimes."

"None of this will be easy," he said. "And it can't be the work of government alone. As we saw after 9/11, the strength of America has always been the character and compassion of our people.

"So as we mark this solemn anniversary, let's summon that spirit once more. And let's show that the sense of common purpose that we need in America doesn't have to be a fleeting moment; it can be a lasting virtue ? not just on one day, but every day."

In the Republican address, Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada stuck to economic themes, criticizing the Obama administration for creating "more government that continues to impede economic growth at every turn."

"To paraphrase one of the business leaders in my state, this president and his policies have been a big wet blanket on our economy," he said.

Heller called for a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution and repeal of the health care law that Obama signed last year, both demands that Republicans have failed to achieve.

He also called for an overhaul of Social Security and Medicare to reduce their long-term costs and to simplify tax laws.

Curses! Diplomacy and the Twit(ter) Age | Democracy and Society

Hungary reemerged as a hot discussion topic in democratization circles recently ? for all the wrong reasons. As discussed by my colleague David in this forum, the Hungarian parliament, comprised of a single-party controlling majority, is blazing ahead with a series of controversial electoral reforms, media restrictions, and legislative limits to the number of legally recognized religions in the country.

Offering a window into the usually staid diplomatic banter between allies, the State Department?s public reaction last month to events in Hungary generated a spirited and R-rated kerfuffle involving a senior diplomat in the Obama Administration and a founder of the majority Fidesz party who also happens to be a Hungarian Member of the European Parliament. On July 24, Thomas O. Melia, Deputy Assistant Secretary at State?s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor ? and erstwhile professor in the Democracy and Governance program here at Georgetown ? testified before the House Foreign Affairs Europe and Eurasia subcommittee on the topic: ?Eastern Europe: The State of Democracy and Freedom.? He criticized the Lukashenko regime in Belarus, upon which the US has imposed progressively strict economic sanctions, he expressed alarm about the ?assaults on freedoms of the press, assembly, and rule of law? in Russia, and he praised the Turkish government?s decision return property to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the seat of the Greek Orthodox Church in Istanbul.

On the topic of Hungary, Melia?s prepared testimony expressed concern about recent actions taken by the ruling Fidesz government, particularly the ?unprecedented two-thirds parliamentary majority [attempt] to lock in changes to the Constitution that could solidify its power, limit checks and balances, and unduly hamstring future democratic governments in effectively addressing new political, economic and social challenges.? In response to questions from subcommittee chair Congressman Dan Burton (R-IN) and ranking member Congressman Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Melia straightforwardly echoed the policy enunciated by Secretary Clinton during her late June visit to Budapest: it is incumbent on good friends to raise these issues.

In a particularly unfriendly response, Tam?s Deutsch, a founding member of the ruling Fidesz party and Member of the European Parliament, tweeted in Hungarian, ?who the f*** is Thomas Melia and why do we have to deal with this kind of s*** every day?? This became the headline of a news story in the Hungarian press the following day, and led to a series of articles and blog postings answering the question. An English-language article answered Deutsch?s first question, referencing Melia?s work with the National Democratic Institute in the late 1980s and early 1990s: he trained political party activists and civil society actors in Hungary, including the Federation of Young Democrats (yes, the Fidesz party), in various democratic campaign and election techniques during Hungary?s democratic transition. Other reports, including an Economist article online, observe that Deutsch acted rather hastily without researching the question he posed: before joining the State Department, Melia had a distinguished career as an activist with over twenty-five years of experience promoting democracy and human rights in influential positions at Freedom House, NDI, and what is now the Solidarity Center.

In this case Deutsch was unable or unwilling to substantively address Melia?s well-founded criticism, so rather than defending indefensible policies, he attacked the messenger. Deutsch deserves credit for heightening the international community?s focus on the critical issues raised in Melia?s testimony, including democratic representation, religious rights, and media freedom. Here are the substantive issues for discussion:

Democratic Representation: The Hungary Spectrum blog described the proposed electoral changes on July 12, challenging one significant effort proposed by Fidesz (there are others, including cutting the number of legislators and eliminating compensatory seats). Currently, parliamentarians are elected to the unicameral national assembly, as explained by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, in a combined single-member district and party list PR system. Single member district elections take place in two stages: a first round, wherein a candidate must win over 15% of the vote to participate in a second round, which takes place two weeks later. The goal of the two-week period and the runoff is to create an incentive for parties and candidates to bargain on the basis of the first round results, to create coalitions and/or to withdraw in favor of a stronger candidate from a friendly party. This has worked very well in Hungary since 1990. In a single round simple plurality system, which is what Fidesz is now proposing, five candidates can split the votes: one candidate wins with only 24% of the votes, with the other four candidates receiving 19% each, totaling 76% of the actual electorate. In the two-round system as it stands, the four candidates would have an opportunity to form coalitions among the top performing candidates and political parties to put forth a candidate to represent more than 24% of the electoral vote in the second round. As David describes, the result of Fidesz?s proposed single round simple plurality system would be to limit the ability of smaller parties to form coalitions.

Right of Religion. On August 9, Freedom House called on the Hungarian government to repeal the ?Law on the Right to Freedom of Conscience and Religion, and on Churches, Religions and Religious Community.? As reported by Freedom House and explored in the Huffington Post, the law reduced the number of recognized religious groups from 358 to 14; reregistering religions must pass a series of tests to demonstrate a history in Hungary, provide a petition with 1000 citizen signatures, and secure approval from two-thirds of the parliament. These restrictions violate the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, as outlined in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and raise a host of ethical questions about the role of the state.

Media Freedom: In protest of recently announced layoffs of 550 employees of the state-funded radio and television media, hundreds converged outside of the Magyar R?di? station on July 13. Two political parties, the Socialist MSZP and the LMP green-liberals participated in the demonstration and criticized the firings as politically motivated by the Fidesz party. As Melia testified, this comes on the heels of the ?government replac[ing] members of a media oversight board?with candidates aligned with the ruling party.? As explained by Human Rights Watch, the board is now authorized ?to impose fines of up to ?700,000 (approximately $900,000) on media outlets for ?imbalanced news coverage,? material it considers ?insulting? to a particular group or ?the majority? or it deems to violate ?public morality.?? The United States is not alone in criticizing the law: as outlined in the Economist in January, when Hungary assumed the EU Presidency (which it handed to Poland on July 3), Germany and France expressed concern about the law as well.

Hungary is taking a series of democratic detours: these are complicated issues that Melia and his team at the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor spend much of their time analyzing. Twitter captures a single moment in diplomatic time, just as an overheard quip might have a generation earlier; let?s hope that Deutch?s tweet is not indicative of the flippancy with which the Fidesz party is approaching all other aspects of governance, or of more general hostility to Hungary?s democratic allies expressing well-grounded concern about the country?s current deviation from its democratic trajectory.

Oregon Dressage Society News and Announcements ? San City, Wakeup ...

Wayne, IL ? Competition was in full swing at the Lamplight Equestrian Center as the top 6-year-olds and developing horses in the U.S. took to Ring 2 for their first National Championship classes of the weekend. The day began with competitors in the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Finals presented by Dressage Today 14-18 division performing in an optional warm-up class.

In the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship 6-year-old division the standard was set earlier. Members of the 2005 foal crop demonstrated fluid gaits and a strong foundation in advanced movements such as half-pass and flying changes.

Emily Wagner (La Cygne, KS) and her own American-bred Warmblood stallion Wakeup performed a strong and powerful test to score an 8.88. The judging panel of Janet Foy, Gary Rockwell and Anne Gribbons rewarded Wakeup (Wagnis ? Maiden Montreal by Macho) for a mature performance demonstrating phenomenal cadence in the trot work and a fluid walk tour. The pair made their 10-hour drive from Kansas well worth the trip scoring a 9.2 for their trot, an 8.8 in the walk, 8.5 and 8.9 for the canter and submission respectively. Their general impression score, a 9.0, was the highest of the day.

For Wagner, today?s performance was especially meaningful as Wakeup is a member of the second generation of horses she has competed successfully. ?His dad was my Young Rider Horse. It?s so cool because I know his whole family, his brothers and half-brothers,? she said.

Silva Martin and Faye Woolf?s Aesthete (Trento B ? Unusual by Gribaldi) rode to a score of 8.62 for second place, last year?s 5-year-old champion Bon Chance (Bellisimom ? SPH Wintersong DE by Weltmeyer) owned and ridden by Caroline Roffman stand in third after scoring 8.16. With today?s Preliminary Test accounting for 40% of the overall score, the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship for 6-year-olds is still up for grabs and will conclude Sunday with the Final Test being weighted at 60% of the championship average.

The quality field of this morning?s competition means that the future of dressage in the U.S. shines brightly. Wagner was extremely complimentary of the entire Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Program and believes the focus on the up-and-coming horses will benefit the sport on every level.

?This is a fantastic program; it brings so much attention to the young horses,? she said. ?If we expand our base of young horses it will only help the High Performance base.?

Lisa Wilcox and Pikko del Cerro.

Chuck Swan/ Swan Studio LLC.

Fifteen horse and rider combinations contested the Qualifying Test in the USEF National Developing Horse Dressage Championship sponsored by The Dutta Corp. and Performance Sales International, which will count for 40% of the overall score. Judged by Gary Rockwell, Anne Gribbons and Janet Foy these competitors performed at the Prix St. Georges level. Lisa Wilcox of Loxahatchee, NM, and Horses Unlimited?s Pikko Del Cerro HU (Pik L- Rohweena by Rohdiamant) were the only combination to score in the 70s. They scored a 70.175% for their crisp performance highlighted by an expressive yet steady trot tour.

Wilcox was pleased with the American-bred Hanoverian stallion?s entire test but the flying changes were the highlight. ?My absolute favorite thing were the changes,? she said. ?Both the 4s and 3s felt very expressive. He felt very nicely on the aids.?

Going into Sunday?s final which will count for 60% of the overall score, Wilcox hopes to get more of the same out of the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship veteran (he competed in both the 5 and 6-year-old divisions).??I am looking for the same horse I had today on Sunday,? she said.

Warsteiner (Riverman-ISF ? Welona by Roemer) owned and ridden by Heather Mason was second with a score of 68.86% and Sharon McCusker rode her own Wrigley (Son Deniro ? Pinomia by Rohdiamont) to a third place finish scoring a 67.719%.

San City leads the way after Thursday

Caroline Roffman and San City.

Chuck Swan/ Swan Studio LLC.

Competition kicked off Thursday at the Lamplight Equestrian Center in three of the National Championship divisions. Caroline Roffman (Wellington, FL) and Linda Crabtree?s San City took the early lead in the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship 5-year-old division posting a score of 8.9 for the Preliminary Test. The Hanoverian stallion (San Remo ? Bounty by Bolero) demonstrated a powerful canter tour and was rewarded for an exemplary canter to walk transition.

Roffman could not have been more pleased with the young horse?s performance. ?He was the best he?s ever been and put his best foot forward,? she said. ?He did everything I asked for and more.?

San City and Roffman lead the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship 5-year-old division after the Preliminary Test from Werner Van Den Brande who rode Hampton Meadows, LLC?s Donna Tella (Don Picardi ? Gesa by Glorieux) to a second-place finish on a score of 8.6. Lauren Chumley and Alice Tarjan?s Somer Hit (Sandro Hit ? Rhussia by Rotspon) stand in third place after scoring an 8.3.

The Preliminary Test, judged by Jeanne McDonald, Maryal Barnett and Linda Zang, counts toward 40% of the overall average determining the division?s champion. The Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship 5-year-old division concludes Saturday with the Championship Class. This Final Test counts for the remaining 60% of the score.

?If we can have that ride again in the final, I couldn?t ask for anything more,? Roffman said, looking toward Saturday?s test.

Earlier in the day, warm-up classes for the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Finals presented by Dressage Today 13 & under division and the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship 4-year-old division were held. Champions in these divisions will also be crowned on Saturday.

Competition gets back underway Saturday at 8:00 a.m. (CDT) with the Dressage Seat Medal Final presented by Dressage Today 13 & Under division at the Lamplight Equestrian Center. Tomorrow will also see champions crowned in the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship 4- and 5-Year-Old divisions.

Austrian probed for abusing daughters for 41 yrs (AP)

VIENNA, Austria ? Austrian officials said Thursday they are investigating allegations that a man locked up his two mentally disabled daughters in a small room in their home, sexually abused them for 41 years and kept them subservient with repeated beatings and threats to their lives.

Police said that the women have accused the 80-year-old of repeatedly raping them between 1970 and May 2011. The alleged victims are now 53 and 45 years old.

A police official did not name either the suspect or the alleged victims. He did not identify himself on the telephone.

Police confirmed they are investigating the case after a report in the Oberoesterreichische Nachrichten newspaper. The daily said the women escaped when the father was unable to get up after the older daughter pushed him over when he last tried to rape her.

The allegations evoke the case of Austrian Josef Fritzl, who imprisoned his daughter in a windowless cellar for 24 years and repeatedly raped her, fathering her seven children. Fritzl was sentenced to life imprisonment two years ago for that crime and for responsibility in the death of one of the children.

The police official said Thursday that the 80-year-old suspect, from the Upper Austrian village of St. Peter am Hart, is free, pending an investigation and possible charges because there is no danger of him fleeing.

Local police commander Martin Pumberger said the suspect denies the accusations, adding it was up to the regional state prosecutor's office to now decide whether to formally charge him on the basis of the police investigation.

During questioning the women said their father repeatedly warned he would kill them if they resisted him, occasionally threatening them with firearms, said Alois Lissl, a senior state police official. They also said that their mother, who died two years ago, was also repeatedly abused by the suspect.

The newspaper said the victims were also beaten with a stick and a pitchfork.

State broadcaster ORF said the allegations were revealed only recently because the two alleged victims did not tell anyone about them for weeks after their escape.

Filling without drilling

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Researchers at the University of Leeds have discovered a pain-free way of tackling dental decay that reverses the damage of acid attack and re-builds teeth as new.

The pioneering treatment promises to transform the approach to filling teeth forever.

Tooth decay begins when acid produced by bacteria in plaque dissolves the mineral in the teeth, causing microscopic holes or 'pores' to form. As the decay process progresses these micro-pores increase in size and number. Eventually the damaged tooth may have to be drilled and filled to prevent toothache, or even removed.

The very thought of drilling puts many people off going to see their dentist, whether or not they actually need treatment. This tendency to miss check-ups and ignore niggling aches and pains means that existing problems get worse and early signs of decay in other teeth are overlooked.

It's a vicious cycle, but one that can be broken, according to researchers at the University of Leeds who have developed a revolutionary new way to treat the first signs of tooth decay. Their solution is to arm dentists with a peptide-based fluid that is literally painted onto the tooth's surface. The peptide technology is based on knowledge of how the tooth forms in the first place and stimulates regeneration of the tooth defect.

"This may sound too good to be true, but we are essentially helping acid-damaged teeth to regenerate themselves. It is a totally natural non-surgical repair process and is entirely pain-free too," said Professor Jennifer Kirkham, from the University of Leeds Dental Institute, who has led development of the new technique.

The 'magic' fluid was designed by researchers in the University of Leeds' School of Chemistry, led by Dr Amalia Aggeli. It contains a peptide known as P 11-4 that - under certain conditions - will assemble together into fibres. In practice, this means that when applied to the tooth, the fluid seeps into the micro-pores caused by acid attack and then spontaneously forms a gel. This gel then provides a 'scaffold' or framework that attracts calcium and regenerates the tooth's mineral from within, providing a natural and pain-free repair.

The technique was recently taken out of the laboratory and tested on a small group of adults whose dentist had spotted the initial signs of tooth decay. The results from this small trial have shown that P 11-4 can indeed reverse the damage and regenerate the tooth tissue.

"The results of our tests so far are extremely promising," said Professor Paul Brunton, who is overseeing the patient testing at the University of Leeds Dental Institute. "If these results can be repeated on a larger patient group, then I have no doubt whatsoever that in two to three years time this technique will be available for dentists to use in their daily practice."

"The main reason that people don't go to the dentist regularly is fear. If we can offer a treatment that is completely non-invasive, that doesn't involve a mechanical drill, then we can change that perceived link between dental treatment and pain. This really is more than filling without drilling, this is a novel approach that enables the patients to keep their natural teeth!"

New set of building blocks for simple synthesis of complex molecules

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2011) ? Assembling chemicals can be like putting together a puzzle. University of Illinois chemists have developed a way of fitting the pieces together to more efficiently build complex molecules, beginning with a powerful and promising antioxidant.

Led by chemistry professor Martin Burke, the team published its research on the cover of the chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie.

Burke's group is known for developing a synthesis technique called iterative cross-coupling (ICC) that uses simple, stable chemical "building blocks" sequentially joined in a repetitive reaction. With more than 75 of the building blocks available commercially, pharmaceutical companies and other laboratories use ICC to create complex small molecules that could have medicinal properties.

"There's pre-installed functionality and stereochemistry, so everything is set in the building blocks, and all you have to do is couple them together," said graduate student Seiko Fujii, the first author of the paper.

However, ICC has been limited to only molecules with one type of polarity. Now, the group has developed reverse-polarity ICC, which allows a chemist to optimize the ICC process to match the target molecules' electronic structure. The reversal in polarity enables a whole new class of building blocks, so researchers can synthesize molecules more efficiently and even construct molecules that standard ICC cannot.

For example, in the paper, the group used the new method to make synechoxanthin (pronounced sin-ecko-ZAN-thin), a molecule first isolated from bacteria in 2008 that shows great promise as an antioxidant. Studies suggest that synechoxanthin allows the bacteria that produce it to live and thrive in highly oxidative environments.

"We as humans experience a lot of oxidative stress, and it can be really deleterious to human health," said Burke, who also is affiliated with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. "It can lead to diseases like cancer and atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative disorders. Evidence strongly suggests that synechoxanthin is a major part of the bacteria's solution to this problem. We're excited to ask the question, what can we learn from the bug? Can it also protect a human cell?"

Studies on the activity of synechoxanthin have been limited by the difficulty of extracting the molecule from bacterial cultures. Burke's group successfully synthesized it from a mere three types of readily available, highly stable, non-toxic building blocks. Thanks to the ease of ICC, they can produce relatively large quantities of synechoxanthin for study as well as derivatives to test against the natural product.

"Because this building-block-based design is inherently flexible, once we've made the natural product, we can make any derivative we want simply by swapping in one different building block, and then using the reverse-polarity ICC to snap them together," Burke said. "That's where synthesis is so powerful. Oftentimes, the cleanest experiment will require a molecule that doesn't exist, unless you can piece it together."

Researchers can also use blocks that have been "tagged" with a fluorescent or radioactive dye to make it easier to study the molecule and its activity. For example, Fujii next plans to synthesize both synechoxanthin and its apolar derivative with tags so that NMR imaging can reveal its location and orientation within a cell's membrane, possibly providing clues to its activity.

"After we have all these molecules in hand, we're really excited to test the antioxidant activity of them in a model membrane," Fujii said.

The National Institutes of Health and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute supported this work.

Green Autos- New Generation Energy Efficient Automobiles | Speed ...

Green autos is ones of the most discussed topics right because global warming is really getting on our nerves. Standard cars emit a lot of pollution and hence damage the environment. Green cars are seen as an ideal solution to minimize the problem of air pollution. Every one is talking about going green these days. The media is vociferous about it; they are constantly educating people about the threats of global warming. There are different green concepts invented and green autos are one of them. I did some research on these vehicles and found that they aren?t as green as you think.

People who are concerned about global warming say that people should use green autos but what are they anyways? And do they indeed play a big role in slowing down global warming? There are two types of green cars available in the market right now ? hybrid cars and electric cars. The latter is not that eco friendly as the name suggests. For running the green autos, you have to charge it in the power station which converts 30 to 40 percent of energy in to electricity. When this electricity it transferred to the electric car from the station, 30% of it is lost through the electric cables. Thus you see, a lot of energy is lost when the power is transferred. The only ?green? feature of these automobiles is that they don?t emit any air pollution but they are not energy efficient as the hype suggests.

The hybrid vehicles, on the other hand, are preferred by many motorists. These green autos come with both gas engine and electric motor. These vehicles are much better than electric siblings and they are much more environmental friendly. But there is still room for more technological research for these hybrid cars.

Recently, a British automobile magazine tested four different hybrid vehicles by driving them throughout London. All four performed below expectations and the magazine said that there is more needed to be done here. The hybrid motorcars are not that green either because the batteries need to be disposed of. They are not biodegradable and hence pose a threat to mother Earth. These vehicles are relatively expensive as compared to standard fuel based cars. I won?t recommend buying these green autos at least at this time because there is plenty of research to be done here to make these cars better.

To sum it up, I would say that the green autos are quite similar to hybrid and pure electric automobiles when it comes to power consumption. Disposition is still a matter of concern and the high price tag is out of reach for most people. But I think the price will come down in the future and then these automobiles will compete with the standard fuel based ones in the market. Also, these vehicles are not a good solution to the issue of global warming. Only air pollution problem is taken care of but a lot of energy is still wasted.

Berto Jongman Recommends...

Worth a read. Interesting report based on innovative research method.? From the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies.

EXTRACT from Overview:

In gaining a better understanding of the future nature of conflict, it is therefore of the utmost importance to go beyond the traditional Western (English) language domain experts, and include views from regions across the world. The main purpose of the Future Nature of Conflict project is therefore to map and analyze global perspectives about the future nature of conflict published over the last two decades across four language domains ? Arabic, Chinese, English and Slavic.

Phi Beta Iota:? Finally!? For years we have talked about the need to do multi-lingual perspectives and statements (e.g. charting Chinese, Vietnamese, Philippine, and Australian statements on the Spratley Islands going back 200 years).? The protocol developed by this team must be ?along with M4IS2?the future of strategic dialog, policy, acquisition, and operations.? Any intelligence community that is unable to do this for any issue, any question, may as well go out of business.

Reading through the report is a real pleasure, with all sources being spelled out in footnotes that are actively linked to the original sources.? This is a marvelous gift to scholars and practitioners at multiple levels.

A few highlights:

Chinese and Russians read all the English stuff, the English thinkers are out of touch?completely?with Chinese and Russian original works.

Special operations, remote, and information operations now co-equal if not superior to conventional armies as future options.

Strategic resource scarcity a primary driver for the Chinese.? In Middle East, water wars between Israel and the Arabs and between Egypt and North Africa are a major aspect of future conflict from Arab point of view.

Chinese are non-alignment power, do not think in terms of coalition operations.? Russians are the most committed to state on state conventional armies.? Arabs, at least in writing, are mired in the present.

Range of actors, including complete spectrum of non-state actors, will challenge status quo intelligence and force structure.

CONTEXT is emerging as a new level of thinking higher than strategic.

?Rules of the Game? will change radically, challenging status quo intelligence and force structure.

Persistent pervasive conflict along a full spectrum can be anticipated absent.

In the English language, Colin Gray, Steve Metz, Ralph Peters, and Bob Scales are all cited.? An appendix provides English-language quotes from all four language groups across all of the attributes.

If there is a small criticism, it is that the nature of the project precluded capture of the literature, for example in Chinese, that focus on ?war by other means.?? It is not correct to say that the Chinese are not focused on political and economic warfare based on sources from the traditional military schools.

This report is worthy of very broad attention across the war colleges.? It should immediately be extended in two ways: first, to include Brazil, India, and Indonesia in the orginal protocol; and secondly, expanded to add the literatures in all seven languages for political, socio-economic, ideo-cultural, and techno-demographic conflict.? A study of population and education policy, for example, across all seven major actor groups, could be startling.

The Truth of Cabbage Soup Diet | Quickest Way To Lose Weight

The Truth of Cabbage Soup Diet

The cabbage soup diet is a 7 day meal plan, aimed at achieving fast weight loss. It is said to have originated Sacred Hearts Hospital to stimulate weight loss for surgery patients.

How the Cabbage Soup Diet Works

The cabbage soup diet is based on a fat-burning soup that contains negligible calories. The more soup you eat the more weight you should lose. The cabbage soup diet is a radical weight loss diet designed around heavy consumption of a low-calorie cabbage soup over the time of seven days. It is generally considered a fad diet, in that it is designed for short-term weight loss.

The typical claimed intent of the diet is to lose 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of weight in a week, though nutritional experts point out that it is impossible to lose that much fat within a week.

Cabbage Soup Diet Plan

* Day 1 ? Cabbage soup plus as much fruit as you like, excluding bananas.

* Day 2 ? Cabbage soup plus vegetables including 1 jacket potato with a little butter.

* Day 3 ? Cabbage soup plus fruit and vegetables excluding potatoes and bananas.

* Day 4 ? Cabbage soup plus up to eight bananas and as much skimmed milk as you like.

* Day 5 ? Cabbage soup plus up to 20 ounces of beef and up to six tomatoes.

* Day 6 ? Cabbage soup plus as much beef and vegetables (excluding potatoes) as you like.

* Day 7 ? Cabbage soup plus brown rice, vegetables (excluding potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice.

What Food is Allowed on the Cabbage Soup Diet

Dieters are allowed only water and cabbage soup they want, plus a very restricted set of other foods. The 7-day cabbage soup diet plan insists on sticking to the small list of allowed foods on alternate days, along with two daily bowls of fat-free cabbage soup. Other specific foods that can be eaten including fruit, vegetables, skim milk, and meat. Dieters are also advised to drink plenty of water.

What Food is Not Allowed on the Cabbage Soup Diet

You are allowed to eat all you want of brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables as specified in the diet. Be sure to eat your soup at least once everyday. No bread, alcohol, or carbonated beverages, not even diet soda. Beverages are limited to water, and unsweetened fruit juice on days when fruit is allowed.

Effectiveness? of the Cabbage Soup Diet

Weight loss will probably occur due to the low calorie intake. It allows people to eat as much cabbage soup as they want each day, which should sound appealing to dieters.? After all, dieters love to hear that they can eat unlimited amounts of food and still lose weight fast. It is not a long-term weight loss solution, but is known to be effective over the short term.
Known Benefits of the Cabbage Soup Diet

On some original documents mentioning the diet, it was claimed the diet is designed for obese heart-surgery patients, so they could lose weight quickly and therefore be at lower risk of complications during surgery. However, these claims remain unverified. Because no one has ever officially claimed to be the creator of the diet, there really isn?t any reputable organization that represents it.

Additional Suggested Health Benefits of the Cabbage Soup Diet

* Fast weight loss.

* The change from some of our normally junky eating habits can be? beneficial.

* Vegetables from the Brassica family (such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower) have been found to aid in preventing cancer.

Potential Risks of the Cabbage Soup Diet

* This diet plan is not recommended for children and adolescents.

* Since the cabbage soup diet only last for seven days, this diet plan shouldn?t cause people in good health any long-term problems, but people who have special dietary needs, including diabetics, should definitely consult a doctor before starting the cabbage soup diet.

* After one week, dieters must stop for at least two weeks before attempting the diet once more.

* Do not do this diet more than four times a year or more than once every three months. It is not a long-term solution to weight loss.

* Due to the lack of energy that the cabbage soup diet will give you, your energy stores in both your muscles and liver will be greatly reduced, resulting in a lower body fluid content, which results in you headache and feeling tired throughout the day.

* You may get too much sodium from the combination of soup mix, bouillon and juice.

* It has also been noted that flatulence (the presence of a mixture of gases in the digestive system) is a common side effect of the diet.

* Dieters often report feeling nauseous whenever they smell the soup toward the end of the 7-day diet plan.

What the Experts Say About the Cabbage Soup Diet

Many individuals and medical professionals are critical of the diet. It is claimed that most of the weight lost is water and not fat, and therefore not permanent. In addition, the recipe for the soup as often given has an extremely high sodium content, usually to make it palatable, and the diet provides practically zero protein for several days at a time. Many people report feeling weak and light-headed during the course of the diet.

The blandness of the soup means that few manage the entire seven days, and often report feeling nauseous whenever they smell the soup toward the end of the week-long diet. However some diets such as the negative calorie diet basically look at the nutritional properties of the cabbage soup diet, and make it more interesting by combining other foods that have the same effect.

Bottom Line

Weight loss will occur due to the low calorie intake.

Consensus is? this is not a very nutritionally sound plan and certainly not one to live on.

Extensive use can damage your health and this diet is one that should not ne used as a primary long term method for weight loss.

Israel retaliates against Gaza, but deterrence game has changed (The Christian Science Monitor)

Tel Aviv; and Gaza City, Gaza ? For more than two years, a policy of mutual deterrence has prevailed between Israel and Hamas along the Gaza Strip border.

But Thursday?s militant attacks that killed eight Israelis and Israel's retaliatory air strikes on Gaza highlight a wild card that could destabilize the already precarious region.

Weakening Egyptian authority in the sparsely populated Sinai peninsula, which shares a long porous border with southern Israel, offers militants a new route of attack. That creates dilemmas for both Israel and Hamas, neither of which is looking for a major conflict now, say analysts.

"This attack was more than Hamas wanted," says Hillel Frisch, a political science professor at Bar Ilan University.

But both Hamas and Israel are but constrained in their ability to deter violence in the Sinai. Unlike attacks launched from Gaza ? a small, densely populated territory run by Hamas ? attacks launched from the Sinai are potentially harder to trace to a specific group, and thus harder to assign ultimate responsibility for.

"Israel has always wanted to deliver the same message that militant groups in Gaza can be harmed," says Talal Okal, a Gaza-based political analyst. "Now the deterrence challenge has changed. The militants from Gaza can start attacks miles away from Gaza."

Sinai security vacuum? On Thursday, militants launched a series of attacks on Israeli vehicles near the Sinai-Israel border, not far from the southern resort city of Eilat. Eight Israelis were killed, including one soldier and a policeman. While no group took responsibility, many Israelis blamed Hamas for at least an indirect role in fostering militants who then traveled from Gaza through the Sinai to attack Israel's southern border.

"Hamas once again wants to remind the world that it can ignite violence whenever and wherever it wants," Mr. Okal says. "It has used the lawlessness and the absence of security in the Sinai to build up and train militant groups that can reach Israel easily since the borders with Gaza are heavily fortified."

Officials and analysts in both Israel and Gaza blamed the attacks on a weakening of Egyptian security in the wake of the revolution that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak in February.

"Since the collapse of the Mubarak regime, the Sinai Peninsula is suffering from a security vacuum," says Mkhaimar Abusada, a political science professor at Gaza?s Al Azhar University.

In the wake of Egypt's revolution, Sinai could become a lawless Arab-Israeli flash point like southern Lebanon in the 1980s, says Professor Frisch of Bar Ilan University. That would give the Islamist militant Hamas rulers in Gaza reach beyond their border by allowing militants to travel into Sinai through the underground tunnels along the Gaza-Sinai border.

Hamas seen as being caught off guardHamas has said that its policy is to fight Israel from within the borders of the Palestinian Territories. Israeli press, however, said that the Israeli intelligence agency Shin Bet traced the attacks to the Hamas-backed militia, the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), which has launched several high-profile attacks in past years, including the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit in 2006.

The Israeli military said it targeted weapons-manufacturing centers in Gaza, but refrained from targeting Hamas militants. However, the killing of two senior PRC members was touted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as swift justice. Today, Gaza launched missile attacks on cities in southern Israel.

Israeli commentators who accepted the governments? accusations against the PRC speculated that Hamas was caught off guard by the attack.

Gaza militants are suspected of developing an extensive network of ties to Bedouin smugglers and Islamist groups abroad. With the decline in Egyptian control at the Gaza-Sinai border, Hamas may have to exert more control over militant traffic through the tunnels connecting Egypt to Gaza if it doesn?t want to be surprised again.

Although Israeli leaders on Thursday evening promised a stiff response against Gaza, they were more circumspect in their comments about the deterioration of Egyptian control in Gaza. Valuing its continued security cooperation with Egypt, Israel is likely to focus on accelerating work on a new border fence and behind the scenes collaboration, rather than publicly confront Cairo with its security concerns.

"The question is what to do beyond this, whether the IDF forces stationed on the Egyptian border should be significantly reinforced, whether headquarters should be reestablished, whether the intelligence system should be refreshed," wrote Nahum Barnea, a commentator for the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot. "In other words, should the situation on the ground be returned to what it was prior to the signing of the peace agreement with Egypt."

In a sign of the potential for tension, Egypt's state-run news agency accused the Israeli army of killing two Egyptian soldiers in the crossfire with the militants. There has been no official comment from the Egyptian government on whether the attacks originated in Egypt.

Gazans brace for war, stocking food and fuelA large-scale offensive against Gaza now, as Israel is mounting a defense against an expected United Nations vote on Palestinian statehood in September, could be counterproductive for Israel.

"If Israel continues to hit Al Qassam training centers and government offices, that will build pressure on Hamas to respond, to retaliate," says Professor Abusada at Al Azhar University. "If there is no intervention of a third party, it will deteriorate and get out of control."

Meanwhile, Palestinians in Gaza are talking of a new war on the coastal strip in light of Israel's stepped-up military activities against the Hamas-ruled territory. Abdul Qader Kojuk, a construction worker from Gaza, says residents are stocking up on food and fuel.

"Most of us are very afraid. It's apparent that no groups from Gaza claimed responsibility for the attack, but I think Palestinians are engaged to these attacks in a way or another," he says. "The response from Gaza groups with firing rockets on Israeli targets and pledging to retaliate the death of the leaders killed yesterday by Israel proves that the round of violence is going to widen. I think it's only the tip of the iceberg."
