Troyal Major League was born February 7, 1962, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His mother Colleen Carroll was a country singer in the 1950s, recording a handful of records for Capitol in the mid-?50s that never experienced any chart success; while his father Ray was a draughtsman for an oil company. Garth grew up the youngest of six children and had a regular childhood just like any other child. He received a partial athletic scholarship at Oklahoma State University as a javelin tosser, but he wound up dropping the sport during his collegiate career. After he graduated with an advertising degree in December of 1984, Garth Brooks decided to try to forge out a career as a country singer. Brooks continued to perform in Oklahoma clubs, and in 1986, he married his college girlfriend, Sandy Mahl.

Brooks recorded his first album with producer Allen Reynolds at the end of 1988; the self-titled debut appeared early in 1989. His combination of cheerful enthusiasm and pudgy boy-next-door looks was a consistent hit with both country and pop music audiences, who bought millions of copies of albums including Ropin? the Wind (1991), The Chase (1992), and Fresh Horses (1995). His hit singles included ?Friends in Low Places,? ?The Thunder Rolls? and ?Shameless.? He won dozens of industry awards and was named both Country and Pop Artist of the Year by Billboard magazine.

By the end of 1990, he was selling out stadiums within minutes and was putting on stadium-sized shows, patterned after ?70s rock extravaganzas. During his 1996-1998 concert tour, he played 350 shows in 100 cities and sold more than 5.3 million tickets. He sold more than 1.8 million tickets in 1996, prompting the trade magazine Amusement Business to rank it as the top country music tour of all time.

Brooks had been married to Sandy Mahl until their separation in 1999; they were officially divorced in 2001. They had three daughters: Taylor (b. 1992), August (b. 1994) and Allie (b. 1996). Brooks got married to country star and frequent collaborator Trisha Yearwood on 10 December 2005.

Garth Brooks announced his impending retirement from country music in October 2000, he had become, in just nine meteoric years, the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music. After the release of Scarecrow, Brooks eased into retirement, spending the next few years quietly and not resurfacing in the public eye until he had a busy 2006.
